Hey guys!

I need your advice once again! Now I am starting to gig a bit I'm finding that I need a bit more variety in my sound, Ive tried individual pedals but its just a nightmare trying to remeber settings and cables and power supplies etc...
I play a wide range of tracks from SRV to pink floyd so something with presets in would be ideal.

I suppose I need a multi effect unit but which one?

I kinda like the Nova system.....

Attached Image

it has TC effects which are great and the option of stomp and preset mode so I can instantly get access to a pre-made patch for a given song. downsides are no expression pedal and its quite expensive.

another one I'm looking at is the Digitech RP1000.....

Attached Image

I like the stomp loop on this to use my own drives etc and the fact that you can keep the pre-amp from your current amp and add the delays, reverbs (Which are lexicon) in the proper place, ie in the effects loop.
Im not sure about the quality of digitech effects though, and although this has amp modelling I'm not really looking for any amp simulations so it may be a waste of money as i wont use a major feature.

Any thoughts would be welcome, or any other things that i may have overlooked, I dont want to spend more than 500 pounds.

Seperate pedals are the best no doubt, but its a right pain in the rump to get every pedl for every situation and then remeber settings, power supplies blah...blah
Im really looking for a gig friendly solution that i can use without trading in all my pedals.

The Nova should be very good for time based effects - pretty certain that TC have used the 2290 as their main source for it. The 2290 was an industry standard for quite a while - albeit a few years back.

As an alternative to the Nova you might want to look at the floor based Eventide Timefactor or Modfactor though these are either to time delay (plus looper) or modulation (chorus/phaser/flanger/wah/filters) only. I think Eventide took most of the respective patches from the Eclipse and 8000 for these. A timefactor would be around 300UK pounds so you would have cash left to add a few extras if you needed them. The Nova is more expensive but you do get both modulation and timebased effects in a single box.

Either TC or Eventide will have better audio quality than the Digitech - even with Lexicon - and better build quality.
Lexicon have great audio quality up with TC and Eventide - my concern is that even if Digitech have used Lexicon's maths and modeling they may not have used the same quality hardware etc. Eventide, for instance, produce hi quality audio partly due to the algos, partly due to the quality of the hardware that is 'over specced' and partly due to the build quality.

One other thing to maybe think about - for 500UK you could instead buy a TC G-Major and move towards a rack based system (albeit that you might need a midi based controller for it). Just a thought...

I like the RP 1000, sounds pretty awesome and has some great features
The Nova System is OK but my understanding is that you can't have it going into the loop for modulation and in front of the amp for the o/d and distortion simultaneously, so basically you have to run the whole thing in front in the amp or only the effects sans distortion in the loop.
If you're going the multi-fx route I'd definitely go for the RP over the M13, way more versatile
Personally I'm a pedal collector so I have had a few multi-fx units and will probably buy more in the future, but buying individual pedals is a little too addictive to give up haha

Oh without doubt mate! I would love somehting that can utilise both, hence the RP1000, but theres no way I want to replace my pedals, just want something quick and easy for gigs!

You can use the nova system in your amps effects loop... (just dont use the distortion lol)

Yeah. biggrin.gif

What would you use for distortion btw,
from your amp, pedal or?
And what kind of amp do you planning to use?
I'm asking this because for many gigs you don't actually need an amp,
you go straight from multi effects unit (or from pedals) in mixer/PA system.
Of course your tone would suffer that way cause nothing can beat real amp
but still many guys work this way and get descent results. smile.gif

For distortion it's a bit hard to use the one from MultiFX. I've read lots of reviews on Nova system, I wanted to get one as well to replace all the stomps at one time. But the analog drive circuit that they market is not that much of a quality as most players complained. On the other hand everything else was top notch, as you can expect from TC.

I have only one Guitar Processor to recommend that I believe it is worthy or replacing the pedals, and it is Roland VG99 system:

It's a bit pricy, it's around 1200-1300$, but if you get one of these, you can forget about the pedals, and go straight into PA on any gig as Muris suggested. I would really recommend that you stretch out a bit for this one, since it is the final word in guitar processors.

If this is too pricy, I suggest that you check out if you can find the older model, Roland VG88

I played this unit and I can safely say that it is the best guitar processor I've played on. Very smooth and thick sound. You can send the signal into PA, it has modeling and everything.

On top of everything I should say that I'm now trying to convert all my stomps to boutique analog ones, and that I never had any problems when playing gigs with them. I put them all in Boss BCB60 pedalboard, need only one power outlet on the stage for the adapter and that's it. All the pedals go there, I like using them, and the sound is much better than any digital unit. So if you really like your stomps, perhaps it may be worth to organize them so they are gig-friendly.

Hey Muris, thanks for the input. At the moment im using a DS-1 and a TS-9 for drive since my amp is very clean (A Fender Blues Reissue) with almost no gain to speak of, again I played at an impromptu gig last night and actually ended up using both pedals to get the gain up for a nice lead tone, The gigs I am playing are only pub gigs so I use my mates PA which is very basic and my amp, the songs I do tend to be more guitar than vocal based so I try and concentrate on getting the guitar tone right, hence using an amp. On my set list I can go from Sweet home alabama, straight to John Mayer and then into pink floyd so it is driving me mad having to frantically adjust the little knobs on the pedals which will only get worse with more pedals I reckon! My thinking is a multi effects unit that cam maybe accept a stomp here and there for when I want ultra pure SRV tones but I can have a multi unit for pre made patches for more complex tones, I mean in the heat of the battle, does anyone really notice all the subtlties of boutique stomps? I think as guitarists we like to think so but I doubt it really!

wow! thats an amazing looking piece of kit VERY pricey though! This is getting upto the price of things like the Fractal Axe-fx! the older model might be an option though, I never really thought about Roland kit but the option of being able to plug straight into a PA or run in front of a clean amp and still have good effects seems intriguing, I'll check them both out!
I understand what you are saying about the stomps, but as i said above I play a limited time diverse sets and cant really see me twiddling away between songs to get the sound right, the nova is looking good for everything but drives at the moment, less keen on the RP now!

The VG99 is really top notch, and Roland knows their stuff, they've been out for too long. Boss is a "B" company of Roland and the Boss GT10 is made to resemble to VG99, although compared to it it is nothing but a toy (with all respect to GT10 which is great in it's price range).

If you have the chance check out VG88, it has support for Roland VG pickup as well, although it can be used without it no problem. This unit is really sweet and still holds it's price. Fantastic value for money these days if you want to go from pedals to processor.

Theres one of these on Ebay atm, no bids and only a day to go or so, might go for 200UK, if its as good as you say it may be worth a punt!

Try to find a GK pickup that goes with it, you will be pleasantly surprised of what it can do smile.gif

Also be sure to try it with the PA system, it's mainly designed to go through PA, rather than guitar amp, although clean guitar amp could be used ofc. Just gotta get the presets right.
