Hey, Im a sophomore in college and have been playing guitar for a number of years. last year i met a few people in college who play guitar, mainly two kids by the names of Connor and Paul. Over the summer I built a Warmoth guitar and practiced often in the hopes of catching up to Paul as he was better then i. So when i returned to college i felt as if i was close to playing like him, but not quite.
The other night we all decided to meet up and jam out a little bit, me Connor and Paul that is. So I pull out my fully customized Warmoth guitar in complete confidence and start to do a solo over Connors rhythm playing. When i stopped the kid literally laughed at me. and said "That was SOOO out of tempo" and i admit it, it was.. i have no experience with playing in a band, just over backing tracks. Before this incident i vowed to never let anyone play my guitar; everyone has that guitar thats is... well you know... like a girlfriend; you just don't share them. I was actually pretty humiliated after Connors offensive interjection, humiliation is something that doesn't happen too often to me, so in complete submission i handed my guitar over to Paul completely contradicting my vow of faith (haha). He played and everyone complimented him for how well he can play the blues... yeah great... whatever.... so a little bit later we're about to leave and on my way out i ask Paul, "hey man ill learn a song and we can play it you know?" to which he responded "just learn the blues man" in rebuttal i said "i know the blues" and he said "well learn it good then" So after that second wise*** comment i made another vow........ to practice so much that when i go back there and play with those kids..... I will play so good and so fast and awesome that i will literally melt their faces off.... BUT i need your help!!! I recorded two guitar solo's over a backing track just the first two takes, nothing special that i did six hundred takes on to make it perfect.... i figured it would give a better cross section of my guitar playing erolling_blues.wav ( 45.17MB ) Number of downloads: 336 erolling_blues1.wav ( 42.52MB ) Number of downloads: 286 thanks |

that kid is probably not a standard to meet, specially due his comment, player with good skills and knowledge would never say things like that. -------------------- Youtube

Again, wise words and nicely said. Don't pay too much attention to what people say. Just listen to your heart and do your own stuff and music. If someone comes to you with a critique, don't be mad about it, just keep it cool. As Muris said, real good players would never give such "compliments". -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

thats really good advice, ill forget about it and just practice any suggestions? After downloading and listening to your tracks, I would agree that there's an opportunity to improve your overall rhythm. Are you recording against the backing track with some latency at play? there's a really cool free metronome out there called wieldmetronome (should be at wierdmet.com or something?) that is quite small, lightweight, and flexible. For starters you would benefit from using it in its basic mode and following along with some of the rhythm video lessons here on GMC. Kris even has one specifically detailing how to best use your metronome! -------------------- ::jafomatic

thanks, and its true you would never say something like that, but as a player of your stature what constructive criticism would you have for me to improve my playing? Criticism is dangerous tool, specially in hands of false people! I would rather suggest you to be selfcritic as much as possible, set yourself high standards and be harsh on yourself, there's always room for progress! However I did listen to your takes from first post in this thread and there are many fields to work on indeed. Timing is surely one of them, then theory and scale knowledge. I noticed that you used Em pentatonic mostly when it's in key of A, go for Am pentatonic instead, for starters. A tip, listen to other blues players, copy their licks, steal phrasing ides, improvising is not just about playing certain scale but also playing with meaning. That's why we ALL learn licks from other players and with time we add bit of ourselves. Work hard and result will come. -------------------- Youtube
