This is my thought, in another thread I was debating around the Zoom R16 vs. Line POD X3 as a sound interface.
The final conclusion was to get a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.

Got my mind set on that now per Ivan's recommendation.

Now, I will line (or mike when possible) a Blackstar HT5 into that for my guitar sound.

I will possibly sell my POD X3 Live and replace it with something smaller and with less options. The POD has everything in it! I don't need that, all I will need is good guitar sound for those times I will need something differnt compared to the HT5.

I'll gladly take recommendations on both hardware and software.
- Small
- Made to deliver teriffic guitar sounds (possibly bass too). Need no mike inputs.
- S/PDIF should be useful with the new sound interface
- Homestudio only

The turn out may be that the POD X3 is the better choise but I'd like options.

EDIT: The new band will take off soon and our game will be progressive, metal and somewhat grungy.
If these sound options can help your suggestions

AMT Electronixs SS-20 smile.gif

That's a little guitar preamp with a recording out (as well as a standard output to use it as a pedal..)
Sounds pretty great, I got one yesterday smile.gif

I'll make you some samples if you want..?

Oh, and there's two distortion samples of it HERE (first time I tried it out, direct in to soundcard) smile.gif

edit: oh, and it's pretty small as well.. Like a T-rex pedal smile.gif

That sounded teriffic, both your clips and the ones on their page. Same character in both. Very very brutal.
I did check out a Blackstar HT DistX pedal, also works at 300V like the one you suggested so it's the real deal. There's also one from Hughes and Kettner but it's a bit too kind sounding.

If you have time for it and you're keen on making sound samples, please do smile.gif

I'll check out the AMT stuff. Thanks!

Sure, I'll get some recorded tomorrow or monday smile.gif
Sounds pretty good smile.gif

The Blackstar also have some great distortion, but It doesn't have a Crunch and clean channel for versatility..
But I'll post a few clips and you can have a listen smile.gif

Micke,
I'm not sure if you're asking what the alternatives are to the Ultra or what pre-amp to use with it?

If it's alternatives there are many in this price range and the majority will offer both HiZ and line level input and spdif. If it is this then you should be looking for the one with the best preamp and AD/DA.

If it's a preamp then you need to look for a recording preamp such as the Engl 530, the Mesa Recording or the H&K recording. Alternatively you could use a high quality rack multi such as TC Major, Eventide Eclipse etc and reamp the clean signal for drive/distortion. Again alternatively you can use a good guitar direct box and reamp.

Whichever solution you're after I don't see why you're looking at spdif. Spdif is 'consumer' grade and limited in both quality and versatility. If it's to connect a guitar preamp to the Ultra then very few can do this as very few have ADC and even fewer use spdif. If you want to connect a guitar preamp to the Ultra I think you'd be better off bringing the preamp signal to line level and then analogue input via jack or trs. That leaves the Ultra to do the AD/DA and you can ignore the spdif.

If it's to connect to the Ultra via a rack multi then a good rack multi will have ADC and various digital connectors but if that's the case why not just take the digital out direct to you pc and reamp?

Anyway can you clarify for me what you're trying to do and as Ivan says give us a price range so we can narrow things down smile.gif .

I agree with tony. If guitar sounds is all you need, one more option that is being overlooked are guitar VST plugs. These days you can find great plugs for various purposes, and with a little bit of production, you can make them sound great. I use strictly guitar plugs in all my lessons, everything is recorded dry and sent to FX channels for reamping.
It just comes down to the budget and what guitar sounds you will be needing. There are several nice options available and some of them are even free (like the TubeScreamerSecret - TSS; stomp modeler that I use instead of pedal to boost the front end of simulated amp). By making a good combination of softwares (and their presets) you can always make a reasonably good sound

+1 = and you have the benefit of keeping the clean sound and experimenting with it as much as you want either itb or out.

Well..
Here's one clip of the AMT Electronics SS-20.

I just recorded it today, showing a bit of the clean and the Lead channel with the gain on 5 smile.gif
It's mostly Rhythm work, but different styles to show you how it sounds..

If you want a clip of the Crunch channel as well, let me know smile.gif

This pedal is surprising me with the great tones it can produce with very little tweaking,
so hope you like it mate!

Attached File  SS_20_demo__Clean___Metal_.mp3 ( 5.64MB ) Number of downloads: 125

I understand Ivan and Tony as well, 'cause I use software myself to record ideas and recording good sound in no time..
But when it comes to serious recording of a demo or album, I'll always use hardware smile.gif
This pedal works like a charm for both direct recording and though my tube amp!

Reamping is also an idea..
But if you record this pedal through the recording out, you can still record though the regular output straight to your daw, and have that signal for experimenting with impulses. Trying out different Cabs with the recorded sound etc.
That will also yield some great results smile.gif

It all comes down to how much you wanna get into it, how much time you want to spend and how much money you can spread about! With this pedal, or the R3FX Dual Resistafier, The AMT R1 or other good pedals you can make some really great recordings and have a mono track for impulses at the same time giving you great opportunities in no time for little money smile.gif

Good luck deciding mate biggrin.gif
