How about if you could plug in a real guitar, and get instantaneous feedback on rhythm and pitch accuracy? I'd like that, but it doesn't seem to exist yet. I've only played RockBand a little bit, but I found the drums the most fun to play.

I would go the Guitar Hero route more for the sake of song selection. In particular, Guitar Hero Metallica has some really cool songs. Although, not so much Metallica but the other artists really! wink.gif

I know, I was just kidding. But a game where You can plug in Your real guitar sounds like fun.
Btw. there is a version of guitar hero in computer form, I even think its free!
Regarding to my kids, Rockband is far more fun, since you have the drums and can play together with friends....

Not sure about the other versions of Guitar Hero but at least with the Metallica version you could play bass, drums, guitar or sing. So the title Guitar Hero is probably a little misleading.

[EDIT] >>

Oh, and I remembered reading this on Wikipedia a few weeks back which was interesting:

Slash, in describing the band-specific Guitar Hero titles for Aerosmith and Metallica in an interview with Rolling Stone, stated that "Those are two ones that I think gives [the ''Guitar Hero'' series] some credibility. And they're doing a Hendrix one, which is great", hinting at the development of a Guitar Hero: Hendrix.

I had the same question a couple months ago myself. I went with Guitar Hero and the kids (3, 6 and 8) all love it. And as far as I understand there's more songs to fin there, but Rockband 2 has better drums.

Guitar Hero worked for me.

i had rock band 2 and GH WT, they are esentially the same game.

The deciding factors are :
Track lists
Feel of the equipment

Altho the real things is far better, the games are awesome fun to play, especially with a group of friends

Goes for whatever songs you like. If you like poprock to hardrock, go with GH. If you're more hardrock to heavy metal, go with Rockband. If you like Metallica, go with GH : Metallica \m/

Both games are equally the same, have about the same number of songs, and gameplay is roughly the same.

I like Guitar Hero much more.
I like the tracklists of GH, and hate the square notes on screen in rockband tongue.gif
GH 4 (world Tour) and GH 5 have drums, wich have symbals too (rockbands drumset doesnt)
And in GH 5 you can even choose all 4 instruments (like you could all 4 play guitar or even all 4 drums tongue.gif)

For tracklist GH3 is best of all for me, but thats only 2 players (guitar+bass), to make the tracklist even more awesome you need to buy a 3song trackpack, but then you can play For the Love of God, Surfing with the Alien and Soothsayer!

And you shouldn't compare this to the real thing.. its a game and its lots of fun to do with friends smile.gif

Guitar Rising looks great..
I'm not sure if its real though, it was meant to be released in fall 2008, now the release date is set to "2009"

Some time ago some guy --that I don't speak with anymore-- showed me a "real" guitar hero style teaching system. I'm not sure if it was a midi pickup or what but there was an attachment, plus some other device, a tv/monitor hookup, etc, and the purpose was as stated in this thread: real time rhythm & pitch detection. It supposedly teaches you how to play in the same style as guitar hero, but with a real instrument and real techniques.

If I ever find it again, I'll post it.

I missed this in my initial reply, it seems to be exactly what that guy was telling me about a year or two ago.

Here's another article about it from gizmodo.

Aha! Thanks for this tip! I thought there had to be something like this, but it's too bad there's such a discouraging history of it being almost-but-not-quite ready for release. However, following the trail via google I also found LittleBigStar

http://littlebigstar.net/main/

which is similar, free of cost and available now (but its a hobby project and only for Windows, which I don't have). Has anyone here tried it?
