Since we have a first improvising assignment this week, I would like you to upload your takes here in this thread. It will be fun to have them all in one place so we can listen to each others takes and evaluate. Looking forward to hear/see what you come up with.

I'm not really happy about the recording but it's the best I can show you at this moment.
The sound is really bad in my opinion.

But I've added the guitarpro!

Very good take Angelo!

Here is some feedback:

You made a nice improv over the backing track. Note choice was good (roots and 5ths) and there were no wrong notes in there. One thing I notice is that you did stick to your favorite phrase - 1 - 8 - 5 - 1 . It would be a little more interesting line if you made other phrases like : 1 - 5 - 1 - 8 , 1 - 8 - 1 - 5 , 8 - 5 - 1 - 5, 8 - 1 - 5 - 1 . Those are just examples of possible patterns when starting on the root note. Generally you want to use a root note for start in bars where chord change occurs - to make it stronger. In this improv you did that but you also did start some phrases on 5th when chord change occurs - that is ok too and gives a more melodic feel to the line but you need to watch out for that line to have a good flow when starting on other then root notes. You could also repeat notes like : 1 - 5 - 5 - 8 etc. When having root note on A string , don't forget that you have a perfect 5th on the E string above the root note too. So try to randomize your lines and practice phrases you are not so used to playing. Good job overall, this is a good start!

Now regarding video and recording, you need to play this line in full half notes durations. You played it "staccato like" but it doesn't work against this type of backing and in this kind of improvisation. You want those low bass notes ringing long and clear. Slides are nice touch and they work well! I guess you choose staccato style as it appeared easier to play or something. You were a bit unsteady in time here, playing straight half notes is not that easy at all. I recommend that you tap your foot to the beat (1 note per 2 beats are half notes). I gave this assignment and insisted on 2 feel time because I know it needs extra practice and attention. With this type of 2 feel jazz walking line you need to have notes ringing long and clear + keep time well. Bass is the foundation and time keeper in this type of band situation.

Sorry for long comment and lots of observations but this is your first MTP video recording so I must give you full feedback.

Your posture : try to keep your left hand thumb behind the neck for support. Also try to straighten your picking hand a little bit to form more "90 degrees" angle against the strings you pick. Those two are very important, especially left hand thumb behind the neck. I think it would be good idea to practice technique exercises from last week's assignments more and to record a video of them if you can - they will help you with technique greatly!

Good work so far mate ! smile.gif

Yeah I'm gonna practice some more on the technique, this was a very good excercise, I hope there will be more excercises like this in the future! smile.gif

Glad you like the detailed feedback! smile.gif

Now what would be a good exercise is to try to re-record this again BUT with this in mind:

1. print the backings chord progression on paper (or write it down)
2. play straight half notes
3. improvise directly on the spot by watching the chords on paper, without previously composing the bass line
4. try to incorporate different patterns I mentioned above
5. record live improv, doesn't matter if you make some small mistakes in a take

Generally you want to learn how to improvise this type of line on the spot without composing.

Next assignment will be on Monday, maybe you'll have time to do it tomorrow smile.gif

I see. Do you know fretboard good enough to find roots of each chord? You can start from there and improvise in one position for each chord. You should be familiar with perfect 5th shape and octave shape, and if you are having root on A string or D or G string , perfect 5th octave lower is on the same fret (as root) but string above!

Sorry to hear that! sad.gif

Don't worry, these are all general tips - you can practice and do them whenever you get time.

Its cool! smile.gif

Hopefully I'll record something tomorrow... Working on stuff with two bands when in one of them I needed to learn around 40 songs(about 10 to go..) made my schedule more busy than I thought, but it also gave my progress in bass a major boost, so that's a good thing smile.gif

Cool looking forward to hear what you come up with. If you manage it would be cool to include a guitar pro file too so others can see/analyze. smile.gif

It's not mandatory but from your example I saw it can be useful for everyone to see what you played smile.gif I was thinking about tabbing your take afterward smile.gif

I liked this take. What I notice though is that you are having troubles with transitions from one note to another. They are half notes and you want to keep bass covering lot of sonic space in this kind of backing. So there is no room for small pauses between notes or shorter notes when playing 2 feel. Since there are 2 notes per each bar - when you play the first note try to keep it ringing until you play the second note. You want to practically overlap those two notes so be careful where you position your right hand when you want to pick the second note in order not to choke the first note before you play the second one. Left hand also has to hold down until you play the second note and then gently pull away from the first note. This was a good improv, only on one chord you lost your "place" but you got back. You can also experiment with different cells like I suggested to Mrblomme, like playing root - 5th - octave - 5th , then octave - root - 5th - root , octave - 5th - octave - root etc to get more interesting lines. Your bass tone was very appropriate for this kind of improvisation where you need to have a boomy smooth bass frequencies rich sound.

Good job overall!
