I think the difference is arrangements, sound, role of instruments in the band!

Yeah I know, but I wanted something more specific than that, I can only think about instrumental differences ( acoustic guitar vs. Electric guitar, etc... ), the sound is better because traditional blues are from a time where technology wasn't so advanced as it is today. I think the "modern" blues has borrowed a lot from other music styles - everything is connected somehow. For instance Robben Ford is a great jazz-player as well, SRV took a lot of Hendrix style and if You look at Guthrie Govan he's incoorperating just everything about modern guitar. Also it happened a lot tonally-wise, since the "old" blues was mostly based on the blues scale and occasionally the major third. Nowadays, players use a lot of other stuff in their solos like Mixolydian modes, chromatism, playing on each chord instead of playing one scale for the whole progression. Well, there You something at least..... //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. I would go along with Staffy's answer here. Traditional blues is a blend of musical forms and inlfuences that existed in those old days. Modern blues is all that + influences of modern age. So modern blues is evolved but still kept his roots. I suggest you investigate blues articles, specially wiki ones, and other blues history articles and try to spot the major differences yourself.
If you need to write a paper on this I can suggest some (very rough) structure: 1. Introduction - describing the problem you have - describe the methods and sources you used in finding the solution for the problem 2. Presentation Main Content - describe the history of blues and it's origins, and make a historic blues graphical timeline with famous musicians (this is effective with presentations) - describe the old blues, name musicians and musical styles of those old days - describe modern blues, name musicians and musical styles it has blended with during the course of years - compare two styles together and spot the major differences 3. Conclusion: - repeat once more key differences between the styles - possibly tell a bit about the future of blues -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE
