This question is more for the newer people trying to become dedicated shredder. However, input is most definitely welcome from those who remember being where we are now smile.gif

How do you keep going when progress is slow and you're lost in a massive sea of stuff to learn but are stagnant every where you seem to turn?

Sometimes I very much feel like a minnow in the ocean. There's so much to do and learn, but progress is very slow.

For instance, I know my pentatonic scale boxes, but it's hard to sit and improvise when I'm just learning how to box switch, or the licks based on pentatonic scales are far above my speed.

So how do you do it? How do keep practicing when the progress is slow, your coordination is off, you feel like the small guy and you just want to put the guitar down?

My influences keep me motivated. When I see Rusty Cooley play (Huge influence) I think to myself, ''If he is capable of that, I am also, but, only with dedicated practice.'' Also, next time you sit and play, go into the session thinking you're the greatest player in the world, I swear to God, whenever I do that, my practice sessions are awesome!

This is a really important topic - I'd like to see more answers - as I constantly struggle with this too!

I agree with influence thing - also a live performance, or maybe jamming with another guitarist can be really helpful for me. smile.gif

I do almost the same thign as cooch does. I see an amazing guitarist and cant wait to be just as good! Knowing its a long shot i just cant stop practicing since..
I'm pretty new to practicing "seriously" too.
It's just that i know if i practice.. Im gonna get better someday.. and i've already seen results smile.gif

There is one more thing that motivates me. It's friendly competition biggrin.gif
I had an old friend that i hadnt met for about 4 years that i met about a month ago. He got his own band now and man is he amazing! he's like my inspiration! The guy's only 19 too.

I keep telling myself i got 3 years more to be as good as he is biggrin.gif and i havta do it!

Thats cool man, but, I don't think you should have a mentality thats like ''I need to get this good within xx amount of time'' instead, it should be like ''If i'm ever going to be that good, i need to practice seriously and eventually i'll get there'' Thats just completely my opinion though.

It seems to be working for me so far.
Oh and one more thing i think about is about how i want my next solo on stage to be way better than my last. So i guess u can say i kind of compete with myself soemtimes tongue.gif

Another thing about what you said cooch, you know about how you're influenced by how rusty plays.. Im pretty much influenced by my friend.. and i know for a fact that with practice it is possible! cause at my age.. I remember his playing being quite a lot like mine at the moment smile.gif So it's kidna like proof for myself that it is possible.

But playing guitar isnt all about friendly competition! dont get me wrong smile.gif.. its just somethign i use to motivate myself sometimes. That along with really wanting to be some worthy of being called a great guitarist smile.gif

I absolutely agree. The 'self competition' thing is more like a 'keeping track' sort of thing. How long have you been playing?

Exactly smile.gif
Well i picked up my very first guitar (which was my mom's heh) when i was about 12 or 13. I've had huge breaks in the middle with no playing at all cause of school an stuff and now im 16. So i guess that makes it about 3 and a half years. Serious practice wise i'd say maybe about 8 months or so.. I just wish i found GMC earlier! i had nothing to learn from all those years lol. So i kinda played what i knew instead of learning too many new things. until i joined GMC ofcourse.. the same day you did smile.gif
How about you?

10 months or so. I'm really proud of my progress, I think it's due to the fact that I have a wide array of Guitar Resources. GMC has been the best thing that has happened to my playing!

Theres absolutely no one i could learn from before.. When i say my friend sweep pickign i was like wow! how on earth did u do that! haha.. cause i've not lived in the USA or Europe or anywhere i could get any decent guitar classes from.. so GMC is kidna like the only really good thing that's happened to my playing, and by far the best smile.gif.. Right now its my main motivator! biggrin.gif

Awesome question man! It's really important to keep motivated!
It's easy to stay motivated when you're making lots of progress or getting all kinds of praise, but staying motivated when things are going bad is extremely hard. I've been playing for about a year, and I've gone through some nasty ruts, I can't really put my finger on what keeps me motivated besides trying to be postive, and my love of music makes staying positive easier.

My motivation are basicaly my influences: Rusty, Vai, Michael Angelo, Luca Turilli
I never have problem with motivation for practicing. The only thing that happens to me pretty often is the feeling of: "Damn, maybe i will never be able to play like them!" - but then next morning it's whole new day and i run a 7 hours practice session and at the end of the day feel great!

Iwas never happy with what i was able to play. Every day i tell myself that i suck at guitar and then i jump onto practice and practice and practice - and i repeat it every day, so i am never satisfied with what i play because i know it can be better.

Listening to guitar music in general helps. But sometimes listening to Petrucci, Gilbert or Vai's playing or whomever who is way way WAY out of my league there's one medecine. Be inspired but a guitarist that play slightly better or worse than you.
Go see a coverband or a music contest or something. Watch the guitarist who plays better than you, put your arms in a cross before you chest, lean your head to the side and think to youself - "I can do that". Then tun home full of enthusiasm and practice. cool.gif

Sometimes it's better to have a goal that's reachable on shorter terms. Aiming for Rustys playing is cool, but it might take a 100 years to get there. Any normal guys playing might be a better short term goal.

I agree with u on that one mike smile.gif
And as a way of thinking.. you feel like it's more do-able than reaching for someone like steve vai right from the start.. chances of you being disappointed are much lower.. and you'd stil be motivated to do better than your are.. next you can aim higher!

Some days I listen to some of my favourite guitarists and think wow that's so cool, isn't guitar amazing? Other times I listen to something and think why am I bothering, I'll never be able to do that - it probably just depends on my mood in the first place. One thing that does motivate me is that over time I understand more and more about how different guitarists do their stuff. When I first heard DG playing the solo in Another Brick in the Wall it was just a blur of notes. A couple of years later it was comprehensible and I figured out how to play it on my own. 3 months ago, speedpicking was incomprehensible to me - how do they do that? Now I can see, hey, that guys just playing repeating triplet patterns or something. When I have a moment like that it really motivates me ! Another thing that helps is to play something you can really play well for a long time, over and over again, like a looped backing track. Have fun, put new subleties and nuances in every time around and by the end you believe you are a guitar god because you can play it so well - that really helps me!

listening and watching great guitar players is a lot of fun, but there's also the downside of wow i can never do that
my solution: utube videos laugh.gif
players that play the things of your favourite player, but maybe not as tight and make mistakes
e.g. i just saw this guy play dirty little thing solo on utube, pretty difficult, but when i saw him it made me wanna play it too, else i would have never attempted it

Just listening to music and seeing my heroes perform. Everytime i see a good live show, like i saw Necrophagist live on December 8th 2006, and still now when i think about it i get all hyper and just want to practice as much as i can. And whenever i hear a good album it really keeps me going, like i was listeing to Triviums "The Crusade" and every time i hear the title track, i just get so inspired, i pick up my guitar. or everytime i hear Iron Maiden, that always gets me going.

Damn, i really got to play now!
