I guess I took it wrong. I can see how that works! Good mentality, man.

I absolutely agree. The 'self competition' thing is more like a 'keeping track' sort of thing. How long have you been playing?

My motivation are basicaly my influences: Rusty, Vai, Michael Angelo, Luca Turilli
I never have problem with motivation for practicing. The only thing that happens to me pretty often is the feeling of: "Damn, maybe i will never be able to play like them!" - but then next morning it's whole new day and i run a 7 hours practice session and at the end of the day feel great! Iwas never happy with what i was able to play. Every day i tell myself that i suck at guitar and then i jump onto practice and practice and practice - and i repeat it every day, so i am never satisfied with what i play because i know it can be better. Listening to guitar music in general helps. But sometimes listening to Petrucci, Gilbert or Vai's playing or whomever who is way way WAY out of my league there's one medecine. Be inspired but a guitarist that play slightly better or worse than you.
Go see a coverband or a music contest or something. Watch the guitarist who plays better than you, put your arms in a cross before you chest, lean your head to the side and think to youself - "I can do that". Then tun home full of enthusiasm and practice. Sometimes it's better to have a goal that's reachable on shorter terms. Aiming for Rustys playing is cool, but it might take a 100 years to get there. Any normal guys playing might be a better short term goal. -------------------- My bands homepage

Some days I listen to some of my favourite guitarists and think wow that's so cool, isn't guitar amazing? Other times I listen to something and think why am I bothering, I'll never be able to do that - it probably just depends on my mood in the first place. One thing that does motivate me is that over time I understand more and more about how different guitarists do their stuff. When I first heard DG playing the solo in Another Brick in the Wall it was just a blur of notes. A couple of years later it was comprehensible and I figured out how to play it on my own. 3 months ago, speedpicking was incomprehensible to me - how do they do that? Now I can see, hey, that guys just playing repeating triplet patterns or something. When I have a moment like that it really motivates me ! Another thing that helps is to play something you can really play well for a long time, over and over again, like a looped backing track. Have fun, put new subleties and nuances in every time around and by the end you believe you are a guitar god because you can play it so well - that really helps me!
