Heyy Bogdan!

i am very proud that i am chosen for the Mtp!
first ill say that myn english can some times not be that good but ill try to do myn best!

ok here come's a little bit more information about me and myn playings!
I am sonny and i am 14 years old, living in the netherlands,
on school ill met some friends who all where playing bass/guiter. i liked the bass the most. so i decided to buy an bass guitar, that was 3 years ago. the first year of playing i was not very active. but the last year i have some bass lessons on monday and i making good progress but i want to learn more so i decided to submit on the MTP biggrin.gif

Myn playing level:
I think that myn playing level is not beginner anymore, i can do the lessons here on gmc who are graded 4-5. i can't do slap and pop at all but i really want to learn it. i have tried it before to learn it but it didn't go well.

Myn playing styles:
i like to play rock bass lines and bass lines with an really good groove in it. some bands i like to play are muse! some RHCP. and i like to play melodic pieces, like the beginning of sweet child 'o mine its really nice biggrin.gif i don't like to play metal and that

What do i want to learn?
i want to learn slap and pop i like that alot. and rock groovy styles,
i want to learn some melodic solo's on the bass i saw them and i like it alot.
that are the sides i want to go smile.gif

i hope u have enough information if not, just ask and i answer everything smile.gif
i really liked it that i am now got mentored by you smile.gif
if u something don't understand just ask me and i'll try to explain wink.gif

Maybe it's good to tell that i am 1 week on vacation in december i tell u the exact date later don't know it out of myn head know.

Greetz sonny!

Weekly assignment 1:

Technique and timing workout

Lesson to practice: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/technique-exercises-1/

Goal : To be able to play all 6 exercises without mistakes on various tempos and all over the fretboard.

Purpose : Develop proper right and left hand technique and posture + work with a metronome to gain better time keeping skills.

Instructions :

Start tempo: 60 bpm
Target tempo: 120 bpm
Time to practice: 30 minutes daily

You should start by playing quarter notes (meaning one note per metronome click). After you successfully master the tempo of 120bpm (in quarter notes) switch to playing 8th notes (meaning 2 notes per metronome click). You need to play each exercise continuously over whole fretboard. In practice that means - you want to start an exercise on 1st fret, do the exercise ascending and descending and once you finish the pattern immediately move the whole thing one half step higher starting now on 2nd fret and move up the neck that way. For successful practice you need to be able to get to the 12th fret without mistakes on each tempo you practice on.

Rules of the practice:

1. Fretting hand will be fretting 1 finger per fret. You fretting hand thumb should be behind the neck - giving support.
2. Picking hand will be doing alternate picking. When picking notes alternate strictly between index and middle finger. Keep alternating even when changing strings you are playing on. Playing two notes in a row with a same finger is considered as a mistake when doing this kind of practice.
3. Picking hand thumb should be anchored on a "string above" the one you are playing on. If you are playing on E string, rest the thumb on the pickup. If you are playing on G string rest the thumb on D string - you get the concept.
4. Do not go to a higher tempo until you are comfortable on the previous one regarding all aspects mentioned.
5. Making mistake in alternating, fingerings or thumb positioning will restart your exercise. Pay attention to ALL the points mentioned. Do not go to a faster tempo if you can't maintain perfection in all three aspects (alternate, thumb position, fingering).

Requirements :

Post updates on your practice daily if possible, describing what have you done. On which tempo have you started and ended up. What part of the exercise (technique) is challenging etc...
In the end of the week I want you to record one of the patterns (your choice) played on the tempo your are comfortable with (highest comfortable one for you at that time) starting from 1st and ending on 12th fret. Include a metronome click or drum backing in your recording. Recording should be VIDEO but if you can't make it I can accept audio one too (but I need video to see your posture and everything so aim for the video one).

Deadline to complete: 9th of December

Good luck and remember to post your questions and progress!

You can post your assignment before the deadline and I recommend doing so - then we can go on to the next one etc. This month you will have 4 assignments and 1 MTP REC take to complete. Since you will be on vacation in December I recommend focusing on completing all assignments in shorter amounts of time. (you need 4 assignments + MTP REC take posted by the end of the month in order to continue mtp to the next month)

p.s. If you need the drum backing track for the recording, just let me know which one (tempo) you need!

Heyy bogdan! biggrin.gif

thank you for this assignement!
today i have played for like 40 minutes this exercise and its going good.

i decided to go 100bpm and i feeled comfortable with that tempo.
for the last tempo today i did 120bpm quarter notes.
and all went fine!

but i have 1 question. is it better to do all the different exercices at 1 time and do them all at the same time a tempo up.
ore an exercire a day?

soon ill be posting something of myn progress.
i am not sure if video going to work but soon ill have video so i can uploud audio file with video!

Hello Sonny,

I'm glad to hear that you are practicing and that is going well. Tell me , are you following all the rules - right hand strict alternating and thumb rest position following on one string above each string you play? All 3 points of the exercise are valuable.

Its a good question about how to practice them. I would approach them them like this:

There are 6 exercise patterns in total.

Play 1 pattern starting from 60bpm (first quarter notes, latter on as you get comfortable you can switch to 8th notes when starting). Play exercise all the way up the 12th fret on 60bpm (quarter or eight notes whichever you chose). Once you play it with no problem on that tempo and all the way up to 12th fret - go 10/20 bpm higher. Repeat the exercise until you can play it without mistake all the way up the 12th fret. Go 10/20 bpm more. Once you end up on 120 bpm and play it perfectly there you can go on to the second exercise pattern and start over from 60bpm.
In one practice session you should be able to go through all the exercises and you will instantly feel the difference.

You could alternatively do 1 exercise per day that is good when beginning too. Later on its good to add diversity into practice session so multiple exercises are welcome.

On very important thing I have to tell you is : don't make jumps in tempo!
10/20 bpm at a time is MAX. And on higher tempos it has to be even smaller 1-3-5 bpm
Even if you are comfortable you shouldn't make jumps like 60>100. When you get more comfortable with an exercise you CAN move the starting point to 70-80 bpm but go from there. Some things are also hard to play slow and if you go to fast tempo too early you can end up being sloppy on the part that you didn't practice really slow.

Good job so far , let me know your progress daily if possible and ask questions.

I would love to see a video of you playing the exercises so I can see your current level and technique but if you can't make it audio will do. For the december REC take you will need video though.

Cheers,
Bogdan

For assignment you need to do 1 of the exercises all the way up to 12th fret. If you want, of course, you can record all the exercises too - but only one will be good for evaluation of your weeks work...

Cheers

Happy Birthday Sonny! Hope you had a great day! smile.gif

I'm doing well, playing a lot as usual smile.gif

Just checking on you, there is time till Wednesday for assignment. Video would be great but if you can't make it, audio will be just fine. Let me know if you need a certain backing (or you can record against a metronome too).

Hello Sonny,

Regarding requirement for this assignment, you should record the tempo (in quarter OR eight notes) which you feel most comfortable with currently. (so this one you uploaded will work too)

Feel free to record 80bpm quarter notes or 60bpm eight notes or which ever one feels comfortable to you currently.

I'll comment your takes in the evening (once you post another one too, that you feel is better)...
Pay attention to note values though, you want notes ringing as long as they should (quarter or eight notes durations) - ideally notes should overlap each other and not sound too "Staccato" (shorten).

p.s. You don't have to record against drum backings that I sent you, you can also record against a metronome (please include it in the final mix though) - whichever feels more natural to you.

Cheers,
Bogdan

Hello,

If you make a new track and go to Insert > click source (up where File Edit View is) you will insert the click track in the selected track.

In the line where Play , Stop and other controls are - to the right there is BPM option. There you control the tempo (click track will adapt to new tempo).

Set the tempo there and insert the click source and make it as long as you need it in the actual track. (clicking on the right side of it and dragging it to the right).

Make a new track and record your bass there.

After you finish, render the final mix and upload it here.

Hope this helps,
Bogdan

Weekly assignment 2:

Technique and theory workout

Lessons to practice:

Technique part : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/technique-exercises-2/

Theory part :
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...ls-bass-lesson/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...?showtopic=3285

Goal : Further extend technique by playing a new set of exercises this week and being able to play faster(bpm). Learn and understand theory about intervals.

Purpose : Develop proper right and left hand technique and posture + work with a metronome to gain better time keeping skills. Learn a basic theory topic - intervals. You really need to understand them well for future progress!

Instructions for technique exercises:

Instructions for theory practice:

I want you to you read the material in my spoken video of the lesson about intervals. You also need to read the Andrew's thread about intervals as its more elaborated and covers more material. Try to understand the intervals, what they are, how are they built, how to name them etc....Try to get into the material and understand it, not just read it. It is a very important subject you need to master for your future progress.

Requirements :

Post updates on your practice daily if possible, describing what have you done. Regarding technique exercises - which tempo have you started and ended up. What part of the exercise (technique) is challenging etc...
Regarding theory assignment, I want you to consider it your primary one! Go through all the materials (you don't need to actually learn my intervals video lesson's bass line, just the theory about intervals). I will post up a small test for you to fill in on monday/tuesday so that will be your assigment this week.

Recording exercises will be optional but if you can - by all means do it !

Deadline to complete: 16th of December

Good luck and remember to post your questions and progress!
