I would say that's to do with practicing and also the finger placement respectively
You have to practice slowly. Many people learn to play stuff fast from the begining and it takes ages to fix it later if you learn wrong. Speed will come with time. The most important is to execute the phrase with no mistake, no matter how slow. Metronome is another important thing to have when practicing. Gilbert's runs are often not easy so take your time and get it right from the start then speed up when you think you're ready to set your tempo faster. Eventually you will reach the goal. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

I set my speed to something that is comfortable. When I feel like I am ready to speed up then I increase it for about 10bpm or sometimes more. That can be every day up to 10 bpm. In 2-3 days I can usually play what I wanted but it doesn't matter how long it takes. It will take less and less every time you develop your skills more.

Great advice Emir has here,
Also divide the whole run or scale into smaller chunks and master them individually and them connect them. With master I mean play them as fast as you can, and then try to do two chunks at the same speed, That's how I sometimes work on things that I can't play -------------------- Visit my:

hello fellow musicians and instructors. i would be glad if someone could give me an advice on this problem or infact problems i have. one example would be Paul Gilbert's technical difficulties or The Gargoyle. When it comes to either pedal note riffs or chords then an immediate excecution of descending scale. my fingers will just all go retarded like. whereas on the other hand if i just do the descending scale, it sounds fine. Does this have to do with accurate finger placements etc. Thanks all. It has to do with accurate synchronization of both hands. You will achieve this by really slowing down and playing with the metronome, using the method Emir provided, or something similar that you made for yourself by adapting this method slightly to match your way of practicing. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Just curiosity, but, where are you placing your thumb when doing the fast licks?

Just curiosity, but, where are you placing your thumb when doing the fast licks? Myself I let the thumb freely move as needed, that's something to consider. Not to have a stracit position -------------------- Visit my:
