Kind of following on from Micke's thread here but in a way this also connects to several previous threads on illegal downloading music etc I thought some of you might find the following amusing...
Just before XMas a local musician contacted us about the possibility of mastering his forthcoming album. He came over saw our facilities etc and discussed costs. We didn't hear from him again until this morning when he showed up here. (Left me a bit put out as today is Epithany but whatever...) He was carrying his laptop and asked if I would look at it as he was having intermittent problems with the audio. Anyway I said sure and I'd do it for free as a favor. As it booted up he said that he had decided to have a neighbor's son master his album as he could do it 'really cheap with software he got free from the net'. This btw is a guy who has spent several thousand Euros to have his album professionally tracked, mixed and produced. I told him it was his choice about the mastering and carried on looking at his laptop. There was no obvious issue with the laptop so I asked him a few basic questions about the problem... It had only started a few days ago. It wasn't a problem on all his audio just a few files. The problem was that every now and then the audio stream would produce a burst of very nasty static. I played a few files at random and couldn't replicate the problem. So I asked him if it was always the same files. Yes it was and he had them with him on a USB stick. So I plugged in the stick in to his laptop and played a file - sure enough after about 1 minute there was a nasty burst of static. I asked if I could try his stick on one of our studio pcs. He said ok and so I booted up the main pc and DAC. Sure enough we got static at about 1 minute in and more or less every minute there onwards. I booted up the full mastering daw and imported his file to show him what it looked like. The noise was written in to the file every minute or so. The file (as you've probably guessed) was his 'mastered' album. The noise was inserted as copy protection by the downloaded demo software that his neighbor's son used. I suggested that he ask the mix engineer and producer for the original stems and files and have the album remastered. He's not sure if they have the original as he thinks it's the file that he gave his neighbor's son. His neighbor's son worked on the original without keeping a back up of the original. There might actually be no copies other than the 'master' now. I told him we might be able to do restoration to remove the noise on it but it would take a fair amount of time and that ideally he would have to get the album re-done from scratch. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. ... The noise was inserted as copy protection by the downloaded demo software that his neighbor's son used... ... His neighbor's son worked on the original without keeping a back up of the original... ...There might actually be no copies other than the 'master' now... I'm actually sorry for the guy but I'm afraid that's what happens when people don't use their brain... Why didn't he have extra copies of his master? Why did the neighbor work directly on the only copy he had? Why didn't he check "trial" version before actually using it for real? Unbelievable stuff. Ouch!!!! Moral of the story???? I'm actually sorry for the guy but I'm afraid that's what happens when people don't use their brain... Why didn't he have extra copies of his master? Happens a lot Fran. I've lost count of the number of times I've asked for the original etc only to be told 'we don't have it anymore'. Even when people have the opriginal it's not always usable. We do quite a bit of restoration recovery work here where we try to recover the master from corrupt CD Masters - remember the days when CDs were 'perfect sound for ever' er no they are not. QUOTE Why did the neighbor work directly on the only copy he had? Why didn't he check "trial" version before actually using it for real? you pay peanuts and you get a monkey BTW my estimate to him for recovery is around 2000 Euros give or take a few hundred. My original estimate for the album was about 750. He hasn't responded to the new quote. Maybe he'll get his neighbor's son to do it . -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. The problem there was that the person in question didn't keep backup - that is really an accident waiting to happen. In addition to that, perhaps he just doesn't have money for a professional job, but I suspect he doesn't understand why the mastering costs so much at all.
