Does anybody know about processors and how to compare them? Which AMD is good and what's the best from Intel?

Hi Emir

You have my sympathies as I am going through much the same myself. My computer died the other day and though I have managed to bring it back to some sort of life it is not happy! So I am going to buy a new one on Saturday.

I too have built my own in the past but its cheaper to buy ready made now.

I know nothing about windows 7 but it cant possibly be worse than vista!

Good luck

I think you're on Sonar Emir so take a look at this forum here. Could be helpful whether you decide to go with a pre-built or DIY smile.gif, albeit there is a lot - perhaps too much - info there .

BTW - for routine pcs I find off the shelf pcs ok. For audio though we've built our own or bought custom built ones. Main reason for that is not price but because it gave us control over the entire build. We've found that off the shelf often leaves too much to be desired in the quality of the mobo, psu, ram, cooling and all too often focuses too much on stuff we're not really interested in like 3d graphic cards. Whilst an off the shelf pc may be marginally cheaper it is not optimised for audio.

Hey Emir,
Win 7 is far better than vista performance wise. But, I am not sure about the driver availability thing. Although, I have not faced any driver issues on a normal pc setup. So, it would be a good idea to do some research on the availability of the drivers for the audio equipment you have or plan to buy. But, I would recommend win 7 over vista any day.

Hi guys and thanks for all advice.

Now I am writting from brand new ADVENT PC.

AMD Phenom X4 9650 Quad-Core processor, (2.3GHz, 2MB Cache),
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit,
4GB DDR2 memory,
640GB hard drive,
512MB ATI Radeon HD4350 graphics,
DVD Rewriter,
Built-in wireless (802.11b/g)
HP 2009v monitor 20''

plus

Microsoft camera - LifeCam Cinema so I can finaly do proper video chat on GMC

All this for £630. I think it can be ok for next 2-3 years

The only problem is that this motherboard doesn't have Firewire port. My camera for GMC lessons works on Firewire. I have Firewire PCI card but can't plug it into the motherboard. There are 2 PCI slots of which I can only use one for my EMU audio card. The other one is completely covered with the graphic card cooler and I can't access it unless I want to use built in graphic card and remove this one. Looks like I have to buy new camera smile.gif

These computers are making us feel like true slaves instead of us being masters. That's too bad

I would recommend eclipse computers ive had one for 18 months and they custom build your machine for you so you dont have to order anything you dont need also they have extended warranties for purchase aswell,

Also you can order your pc with vista xp or windows 7,

for example check this system out for about £600 SYS-188062 www.eclipsecomputers.com

This option looks interesting but I've done it already with PC World. Thanks anyway

Just to tell you guys if you're moving to Windows 7. Every single driver that I had for Vista also works with Windows 7. My EMU 0404 soundcard works with no problem and Patchmix software installed from the first attempt. So far I am very happy. After just a couple of hours testing I can tell that this system is way faster than Vista and you somehow just feel safe and comfortable when working with it. I haven't tried to record anything yet but I will soon.

Yeah, that would be a smart thing to do, at least for vacations if possible smile.gif

I do that because I can access my computer when I am not at home. But yes I should give it a bit of rest smile.gif

The one Audiopaal suggest looks like a decent machine. My current computer is just like yours Emir, and it's giving some problems coincidentially. I'll have to consider upgrading too.
