Hello Everybody,

I know there are a lot of similar topics about playing while sitting down and standing up, but I would like to share this with you.

Probably the Satch fans have already seen this a dozen of times but it's new for me and I love it.

Satch sitting down while playing "Crushing day":

He says: "A warning to any guitar player: Never write a song sitting down because you might be able to play it standing up." smile.gif

(Btw, sorry cause it's not an youtube link).

Hope you like.

yeah, it's the truth. It's a lot more common sense to practice everything you will perform on stage at home while standing up, it will sound better!

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato

I couldn't watch the video, but I'm not sure I get this write. Is it meant to say, that if I write a song sitting down, I might just be able to also play it standing up? That can't be right...

No no, it's the opposite, and I think it matters with intensive songs the most (like Satch compositions for example).

He is quite right but still when I see Paul Gilbert doing monster stretches and arpeggios while standing then everything is possible smile.gif

I bet he *could* play it standing up but not as easy and flawlessly as he is playing his other stuff. Unlike guitarists like John Petrucci, Satch has his guitar strung very low (for a shredder) so playing wide stretches becomes extremely diffcult!

I still think it would have been cooler to put one leg on the monitor speaker and raise the guitar to a comfortable level instead of grabbing a chair to sit down in the middle of a song!

I think it takes both really, certainly I feel more comfortable learning new stuff sitting down but once i know it i can control it a lot more standing up, its weird really, but things like breathing, posture and relaxing your fretting hand all come easier whilst standing. I also make less mistakes when I play live too, how strange is that?

Possibly your guitar is in a better position when standing. Try adjusting the sitting down position to see if that is the issue - sit on different chairs etc. Regarding live performance, maybe its just that you are much more concentrated on playing when you're on stage!

Then it's quite as I've been saying. There is an error in the first post? It should say: "Never write a song sitting down, because you might NOT be able to play it standing up?

I watched the video once again and you're right man! wink.gif

The right sentence is: "Never write a song sitting down, because you might NOT be able to play it standing up".

Anyways, the main point is, sometimes can be hard to play standing, things we have been only practicing sitting down.

I remember John talking about something similar regarding this on one of the Dream Theater DvD`s, I think it`s from Live at Budokan.

Anyways, when the went over to use in-ear monitors, he got himself some custom aluminum-stands to place his feet while playing difficult passages tongue.gif Look at this picture to see what I mean (and MAN, that`s some solid boots!)

On the other hand, both Satch and especialy Bettencourt, has their guitars pretty low for shredders (Nuno has some extreme solos which could be describe as shredder-ish). I need to have my guitar pretty high to perform well live when playing difficult stuff, while I tend to hang it a bit lower for pure rock. when practising, I always learn/write the songs sitting, and when managing it properly at ease, I change to practise standing smile.gif
