I have a Jackson King V guitar and I am playing it through a Peavey amp (moderate size). I had a string on the guitar the was beginning to come undone and was hard to play so I decided to get some new strings. I got some steel strings but now my guitar sounds different through the amp. The distortion sounds less clear and not as heavy, as if the noise the strings make when struck with the pick (which is kind of a clangy sound) is affecting the sounds from the amp.

Anyone know if the strings are the problem or is it the settings on my amp.

If anyone has a Peavey amp, what are the best settings to get a Megadeth-like distortion (like in the Endgame album)?

"Baptized in a firefight. Hot blood running cold as ice. 44 minutes of target practice. All hell's breaking loose.
Outgunned. Watching the force come to a firefight with a pocket knife.
Getting schooled until they shot Achilles' heel and brought down the beast."

New strings sound brighter than old strings. If you have chosen a diffrent brand of strings than the ones you had on your guitar before then they will sound diffrent!
Every string company sounds diffrent, some are chunkier and others sound clearer, you have to trial-and-error to find your favourite brand. It also matters what string gauge you have chosen, thicker strings sound better but are more diffcult to play.

Without knowing what kind of Jackon King V and what kind of Peavey amp you have I cannot tell you how to get a megadeth sound.
No too much gain, plenty of mids, same amount of highs and not too much lows. The rest is up to your Equipment and your fingers:

- Jackson USA Select KV2 King V with EMG 81/85
- Gibson Les Paul Custom Arctic White with EMG 81/85
- Ibanez Rg 8527 J Custom 7-String with DiMarzio Evolution and Air Norton

- Peavey 6505+ head with Marshall 1960AV 4x12 cab
- Peavey Vypyr 30 Practice Amp
- Dunlop Crybaby From Hell, Maxon OD808, Boss TU-2, MXR CarbonCopy, ISP Decimator, MXR Custom Audio Electronics Booster

Its normal that your guitar sounds different now! New strings will always sound different (new, bright, clear). Every brand of strings sounds differently, you should experiment in finding ones you like the best. And since you changed the strings, you need to setup your amp to get the tone you want, old settings won't work with new strings (since they sound differently).
