I've been thinking about purchasing the MXR 10-band equalizer and putting it on my pedal board. Does anyone have experience with this effect. -- or, generally, with using this type of EQ in the signal chain to tweak tone. Can it make a big enough difference? Thanks.

An EQ can sure make a big differance. I only use an EQ for solos, the normal EQ for me I set on the amp.

In fact: The MXR 10-band EQ made such a hughe diffrence that I sold mine! You can make your amp sound totally diffrent, you won't even recognize it with an extreme EQ setting!

It can make a huge difference. Are you having problems in getting the tone right? What gear do you use?

I play a strat with 59 classic pickups into a fender blues deluxe. Rat and tube screamer are my main pedals. I can't seem to get a consistent warm, moderately distorted bluesy tone with some bite -- what I'd like is a lot like what you got in your major/minor box lessons.

Hey, that sounds exactly as the same problem I had.... In fact You actually have the perfect gear for getting a good blues tone. I have the same amp and pretty much the same equipment as You. I realized that it was the tubes in the amp, especially the pre-amp tube. I switched them to NOS-tubes and voila: a new amp with an incredible warm tone.... Fender uses chinese/russian garbage and putting their own logo on it..... Also some bias adjustments on the power tubes may also have some effect. The Eminence speaker is also a little bit hard in its attack, but that is no serious problem. Switch tubes instead of getting an EQ, thats my best advice!

Staffy is right! Your problem can't be solved by an Eq but rather a tube change or even an amp change.

If you cannot make it warm with EQ on the amp, DS1, TS and Tone controls on guitar, then it's not possible with another EQ pedal.
I also hold the same opinion as Staffy. The gear you have should provide enough warmth on many settings. If you cannot make your amp to sound warm, it's the tubes. Swap them all with some quality ones and you will hear the difference at once.

To my ears, the tone is too high-pitched -- and when I dial back it gets muddy. And tone varies from gig to gig. Already ordered replacement tubes. Plus will experiment more with my rig. Thanks for taking the time to respond; appreciated. the forum at its best. smile.gif

Never buy an EQ pedal to solve your sound problems - only to embellish certain elements you already like!

That seems to be a very wise decision, and please report back when You got it changed, although I know that this will be good. wink.gif

I agree with this,...

When mixing music, the best use for EQs is to eliminate unwanted frecuencies rather than to enhance any...

Maybe the same applies to guitar EQs...
