I am using POD farm and I want to work on my tone. The compressor seems to help, I am using the one that has a gain and threshold,(Line 6)
What else can I do to get a smoother sound?

Simply put. You set a threshold. Below it the compressor will increase the level and above it it will decrease the level. You will hear a more even sound as a result.
Attack and release detemin how fast the change of level will be executed.

I think a parametric EQ can do wonders with the sound. Too much to tweak though which makes it tideous to use (available as separate plugin), a semi parametric EQ is easier to use and can fatten up the sound real good (in the POD farm)

You can EQ a bit, and use tone controls on the guitar.

Use some EQ and knobs on the guitar to dial in a smooth tone. Try not having any knobs on full clockwise positions and try to listen to which frequencies sound sharp to you - then lower them using EQ.

By smooth I understand less gain and more mids in your eq
