Hi Emir,
I am back and ready to work. I think now its a good time to introduce myself and say a few words about me. My real name is Alex, I'm 25 years old I live in Romania and I'm a software engineer. I discovered this instrument at the very late age of 21 and been playing it almost daily ever since. I also was in a band and had some gigs but none of us had any real experience in music and things went very wrong. Here's a link if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/silviusv#p/u/3/C1d5GClZ7z0 My favorite style is something like Rock/Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. I started with Queen which I consider to be the best rock band in history. Then, in kind of a personal order (not necessary by the most favorite), Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Rush, Judas Priest, Maiden, Dio, ACDC, Metallica, Megadeth. Probably missed a few but this is in general. Influences (or what I would like to be my influences) Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May, Jimmy Page. (I'm not sure what is the order) I said that this is what I would like to be my influences because I cannot quite capture their style. What I am trying to get out of this MTP: Learn guitar and learn music. Until a few month ago I had the feeling that I'm really good at playing guitar until we tried to record our first demos (with the band that I was in). Then I saw that I know nothing. I had big rhythm problems, everything sounded dirty, no feel and so on. So ever since I have been working on this, found GMC with the Rec program which is great but I know I need a professionist as a mentor because there is so many things I have to learn and I get lost in them. By "Learn music" I mean, try to come up with my own stuff (even if my actual playing still need lots of improvement). I cannot really improvise and most of the rhythms that I've come up I don't like and.. to sum up, I cannot see the whole picture when trying to write my own stuff. Hope that everything is OK with you because I see that you are missing for a while now and can't wait to start the work. -------------------- |

Hi Rhoads and thanks for your introduction.
I've checked your video. Sounds very good. Reminds me of days when I first got into metal bands in my country. We played countless shows like this full of positive energy and hungry for the stage That was really fun. Your influences are very similar to mine. All bands and guitarists that you mentioned are great. From your post I could see that you need some improvement in your timing and riff ideas. Tming is extremely important and you realise that when you start recording (as you said). Do you know how to read notes? We need this to start with. You probably know that you need to submit one REC take per month. Since you mentioned Ritchie Blackmore, how about this lesson? https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/triplet_feel_riffing/ I made it like in Rainbow style. It has many interesting riffs, tight timing and good picking control. Let me know and we'll move on. I played many gigs in front of 3 people, that's ok man Sometimes those worked better than the stadium
about the REC, you don't have to do it every week. One REC submission per month. Upload in the REC forum and leave the link in the MTP assignment thread. That can be anything from GMC lessons. I thought this one would fit your style so I proposed it. About notes, we don't need melodic notation, just rhythm exercises (notes on one line only). I'll prepare some stuff for you today. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Ok here we are with some timing exercises.
You have drum loop in 80bpm to play over. Make some nice warm distorted sound for this. Take any power chord (E or A work good for this) and play these exercises in this order with no pause in between. When you finish them all just stop as the drum loop is longer. The important thing to remember is picking and muting. Whenever you have 16th note, pick down and up (alternate). For quarter and eight notes play just down strokes. Palm mute all 16th and 8th notes. Do not mute quarter notes. When you see the rest you need to mute strings so that I can clearly hear the rest. When you see the rest in 16th note groups think of it as an invisible stroke. So if you have 16th note - 16th note - 16th rest - 16th note You pick first two down and up then the rest should come on down stroke (but you mute here) and the last one is your up stroke. I hope you understand this. Feel free to ask anything you want to know. These exercises can seriously improve your timing. We'll do more of these later with more complex note grouping. Good luck -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Ok, I think got it. I will start working on it, l record myself and then post it in my the assignments thread.
Yesterday I somehow understood that the lesson you proposed was an assignment or part of one, that's why I was confused. Nevermind that So, I was currently working on this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-gu...d-rock-rhythm3/ but is still have some problems with the vibratos there and the palm muting is not good. I think it's best to finish this first and then start on you're lesson. I plan to post more that one lesson a month anyway. Thank you very much for your time and I'll come back with questions/progress. Cheers -------------------- |

I told you, you can take any lesson for the REC submission. We have to do 4 assignments per month plus 1 REC take per month. I hope it's clear now

Hi
Sorry for being late. This is rhythm exercise no. 2. Make a drum loop and play in order with no stop. I was trying this one in 120bpm but if you find it too fast then you can slow down a bit.

The last one is not good. You can always retype it in guitar pro and hear it for your reference. Also the 8th triplets (bar 1) in the first ex. are not very tight but almost. Don't rush there. You're actually doing a pretty good job just need some polishing. 110bpm will be ok to submit. Also make sure that you pick correctly. I can't hear that now but for the video think of when is down and when up.

The last one is not good but we won't repeat this anymore we'll just move on. You're too fast in the last one. Listen to the part 3 and start tapping your 4/4 beat with the hand. You will realize when the part 4 starts how much you are off from the beat. I told you if you have guitar pro type the notes there and hear it with the click. There are clearly visible 4 groups of notes and each represents 1 beat. The first two groups are syncopated, the third is just 6 16th triplets and again one syncopated group in the end. That might be a helpful tip to stay in the beat.
What would you like next? More of this, technique, theory? -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

But.. I did put in GP even before the I submitted the first sample and it sounded the same to me.. I attached the file to take a look if you can. Or it doesn't and I have such a bad ear.
If it doesn't sound the same then ignore the next 3 paragraphs of the message, I just have to work more. If not, I think I now what I did wrong. I think the drum pattern in GP is wrong because I placed the snare and the accentuated kick drum to match the the 8th notes in the last pattern and they are NOT on the beat.. Ok now I see how stupid this was but it's to late now. I though it was an interesting idea. I think the drum pattern should have been like in the second attached GP file. Please tell me if this is OK and I will re-record this and post it in the future (probably when I submit the third assignment). Also if I listen only to the guitar part (3rd attached file) it sounds as it is in guitar pro (if you mute the drum track). Or it doesn't ? And again, I just have a bad ear.. For the next one or two assignments I would like the do something to improve my speed at pentatonic runs. For example I tried in the past to do these lessons that I like very much and the only place that I got stuck were the pentatonic runs. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Rockin...nor-pentatonic/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...cks-101-lesson/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...ck-lesson-solo/ Well the first one really is fast (it seems impossible to me now ) but the other do not seem to be that difficult but they sound very dirty and not tight when I do them. Currently I am working on this aspect and by practicing the pentatonic scale in different positions with 16th notes. A managed to make them sound pretty clean and tight at 100 bpm. Now a think that I should add a recording of how it sounds but I don't have right now. I will post one this days. I don't know, do you have some more effective exercises for this, or maybe you could recommend a GMC lesson for this. I've looked but didn't find anything suitable. Yes it was the drum beat. Sorry, it made me confused. You didn't really need to touch normal 4/4 loop. We don't need complex drum arrangement for this, just your guitar. Even if you did it with the simple metronome it would have be fine. You don't need to submit that again, we got the point
Regarding the pentatonics I want you to learn this chart for the next assignment: You can check this lesson out for your MTP: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/pentat...five-positions/ If you look at the first slow video, that's where I played the whole above chart. That's exactly your assignment. Make some drum loop and play it. Remember for the REC you don't need to pass but you need to submit. Later if you want to do that E min pentatonic lesson of mine, I can help you with that. Great ! So my ear is fine. I got a little worried there
Ok I will start working on the next one. As for the REC I submitted one for March. I am waiting for the results now. Its this lesson that I told you a few weeks ago, unfortunatelly I didn't have enough time until now to do it well to sumbit. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-gu...d-rock-rhythm3/ I'm not sure now which to choose for April but I'll think about it. Thanks, Rhoads -------------------- |

REC can be anything and you don't have to pass it just to submit the link in your assignments.
