Standards have body & neck binding, and I guess better wood quality overall finish.

Studio is a great guitar though, and might be a better bang for your buck, but get a Standard if you can afford it smile.gif

Oh!, forgot to mention, 2008s standards have plekked frets too, which seem to work great.

Both studios & standards have chambered bodies to relief weight a bit.

Unless I have missed something, I don't believe the studio is chambered. It is weight relieved, meaning "swiss cheese holes". They used to do that to the standards, until they started chambering them. The new standards are chambered, and Plek'ed as you say. Pleking is nice. The Chambered ones are lighter, some people like them some hate them. When I got a fancy Les Paul, I elected to get a reissue rather than a standard, and do not regret that. They cost more, but you can find a good deal from an authorized dealer if you know where to go. It has no weight relief, they use light weight mahogany for the back. With the studio you are about guaranteed that the back is two piece, but the lacquer covers that up and it does not affect sound. I am not sure if the top is as thick as on the standard. My premium has a thick top but that may be because it is a premium. Not sure about the normal studio. People say they are a little lighter, and that is the only way I could explain that. My premium is not lighter than my 58.

Besides the premium I have another studio, a mahogany. The mahogany sounds a lot different, and does not sustain as well, but I do like it as well.

If I was to get a Les Paul and did not want to spend a lot, I would look for an Ebony, or a premium, and maybe on Ebay. If used, I would only get if from someone with a reputation to lose, who guaranteed to me that the neck has no problems. I got my premium that way, and the neck was great, and is still great. I have seen near mint premiums on ebay for the price of a new studio, and they really do have nice tops, nicer than the standards.

You will get some "gibson sucks buy x brand" responses here, but honestly, I have 8 guitars, all top brands, and as hard as I try to, I can't seem to get myself to play anything much but my Les Pauls. I just like the shape of them, the feel, the fact that they are heavy, the sound everything about them. I really need to think about selling some guitars, if I don't start playing them. I don't like playing anything not shaped and balanced similar to a Les Paul. Fender is fairly close, especially the Telecaster. The Start not as close, but ok, and strats have a unique sound. Parker is pretty good, parkers are nice. But my SG Standard and Firebird I seldom play, because they are shaped and balanced so unlike a Les Paul. Those are the ones I ought to sell, both are beautiful and mint. That is why I keep them, they are pretty, but rarely play them. I like the way the SG sounds though, just wished they put that concave bottom more towards the front so it was balanced like a Les Paul. If you watch guys here on lessons playing an SG, you see how when sitting, you have to hold it different, than say Marcus S. or Gabriel hold their Les Pauls.

edit: Oh, I did read a lot on the lespaulforum.com when I was deciding on my "fancy go to church Les Paul". I recommend that. You have guys there with dozens of them, who have had them for decades, and really it can help you make up your mind on what is best for you, if you read a lot what those guys say.

Gibson states their LP Studios to be chambered too, check it out:
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-G...aul-Studio.aspx

Either Gibson calls the cheese holes "Chambered" or they have changed something about them, either way, they are a bit lighter.

You might get more "bang for the buck" with the studio, but the standard is just so much sweeter.

Better quality at all points + binding and the flamed top etc etc.

If you do decide to get the studio, get it in a "solid" finish. The burst is just not nice when the top lacks flames (of course the amount of flames varies on all models) smile.gif

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
i'm really thinking about it... do you think is worth the 3k?

i think i'm going with the Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Plus Electric Guitar, love the vintage feel:

i'm looking also for a vintage Japanese, like my greco, which i compared with a gibson flying v 2003 and it really sounded/felt better, something like:

1981
DiMarzio PAF Pickups
All Original
€1300 VG

that one should sound sweeeet.

i'm worried about buying a new guitar, i don't really have new guitars anymore, i sold all of em cause the just didnt felt right, gibson is different?

thanks for all the tips guys!

I have yet to hear a guitar that sounds better than a Gibson Les Paul Custom! And believe me I have played a lot of really expenisve dream guitars, some even more expensive but NONE has this warmth, precision, attack, sustain and fullness of a LPC!

The wood and build quality are just perfect and the gutiar is so responsive to your playing, it's a dream. For example: There was a metalhead in a guiarstore chugging down some metalriffs on an expensive ESP with Emg pickups; when I switched with him and plugged in a LPC from the store into the same amp he was playing he laughed at the LP: Haha dude, that's not a Metal guitar!!!

I smiled back, turned up the volume knob and chugged the riff he was just playing on the LPC - same amp, same loudness.
AND THE ROOM WAS SHAKING

The sound was way heavier and loude, more defined and precise and overall just better! And all that with Standard Gibson Rock pickups! The wood and build quality makes the diffrence!
The guy with the ESP stood there with his Jaw on the floor...

----------------------------------

From the tone point of view I would say: Yes, it is worth 3k. On the other hand I don't really think ANY guitar is worth more than 2-2.5k considering your just buying wood and some metal pieces put together by hand.

My next guitar will be a new 7 String and after that I will start saving money so that in the summer of 2011, when I am playing guitar for the 5th year, I will reward myself with a Gibson Les Paul Custom in white or Black - I will try to get a used one or showroom model with reduced pricing!

I posted my thoughts about "all" Les Pauls in the world before, hehe. tongue.gif
The short version would be:
- Being short in money I'd get a standard faded
- Saving some money, standard 2008 (actually I plan to do this some day)
- If I were I millionaire, I would buy a Les Paul Custom, no doubt...

Here is the complete version wink.gif

This is the Studio I have, 2001. Now mine is dark brown which I like better, I have looked under the pickups and the maple top is very thick. I am not sure if the later premium studios were the same so I can't vouch for them, I think it is discontinued now. I think some of the later ones are chambered (which may be fine, not sure). As you see, the back here looks good, and they show the grain, which they don't do on the other studios. My premium studio weighs just as much as my reissue standard.

http://cgi.ebay.com/2001-Gibson-Les-Paul-S...=item2c53b58eae

I have a fancy expensive Les Paul, my favorite. But I feel that my studio has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison. Just an idea, if you want to get a studio, that once you own, will likely leave you fully satisfied, not craving a more expensive standard or custom or whatever. I think a lot of the studios are great, but I think you are just about assured with one of these early premium studios, if the neck is good, and they can be purchased for a decent price. Just make sure, if buying on ebay, the guy selling it absolutely guarantees that the neck has no issues, and has a good reputation to lose. That is what I did. Looked for a long near perfect or perfect record on Ebay, and wrote the guy an email stating "do you guarantee that the neck is in perfect shape, no issues, and a good working truss rod adjustment?". If they wrote back to affirm, I would consider it. If not an explicit money back guarantee, I would pass. Because the neck of course is the big thing, that probably costs a lot to get fixed if there is a problem.

I have to say that I love my Gibson Les Paul Studio. It sounds great and it is very comfortable to play. I have to be honest with you, I would buy a standard or custom if I had the money but as this is not possible I don't regret it very much. I compared mine with a Standard one and the differences that I found are: The standard is heavier and bigger. I found that the standard has a lower sound but I was surprised when I found that my Studio has more sustain than the standard that I tried.
Bot are fantastic guitars, if you have the money go for the standard or a Custom but if you don't, you will be very happy with a Studio.

I want to add that I also think that you must have a les paul Adrian!!! biggrin.gif

With as much as you have contributed to this site since near the beginning, I think GMC should buy you a standard, a pretty one like Marcus S. has. The teachers here are super, but nobody has contributed more than you, because there is so much variety in your lessons, and you play so well, clean and with great rhythm. My advice to anyone new here, don't just focus on recent lessons, dig into the older stuff, such as what Gabriel has offered.

The traditional is more like the pre-08 standards, while the standard 08 is a modernized standard.

Traditional is weight-relieved, Standard 08 is chambered.

Traditional has 50's round neck, standard 08 has an asymetrical profile.

Pickups on the traditional is the '57 classic and classic plus, the standard 08 has BurstBucker Pros.

Also the standard 08 has larger neck tenon, Grover locking tuners, Neutrik locking jack.. Electronics are connected through a circuitboard using some custom pots I think.

Also comes with strap-locks, which I don't think the tradiotional does.

Awesome, many thanks mate!

So the traditional is like the old Standards and has a 50s neck. I guess they removed the old Standards with a 60s neck from production then.
2008 LPs seem to be awesom though smile.gif

Sorry to invade the topic but this got me curious about buying a Gibson Les Paul Custom, what's the difference between the standard Les Paul and those Heritage versions? Also, are the vintage ones better?

My next guitar will be a new 7 String and after that I will start saving money so that in the summer of 2011, when I am playing guitar for the 5th year, I will reward myself with a Gibson Les Paul Custom in white or Black - I will try to get a used one or showroom model with reduced pricing!

thanks for that zakk, i'm going to try a les paul custom tomorrow or so, i could send a couple of my guitars (not the strat, the v or jem) plus some extra cash i have and buy it, but we will see how good is it smile.gif.

i would be so scared to take it out from the studio to play biggrin.gif

I posted my thoughts about "all" Les Pauls in the world before, hehe. tongue.gif
The short version would be:
- Being short in money I'd get a standard faded
- Saving some money, standard 2008 (actually I plan to do this some day)
- If I were I millionaire, I would buy a Les Paul Custom, no doubt...

Here is the complete version wink.gif

The standard 2008 looks like the best price/quality option, got a lot of cool features, will check it out tomorrow for sure!

Because the neck of course is the big thing, that probably costs a lot to get fixed if there is a problem.

thanks for your long posts bro, i'll make sure the necks are amazing if im buying one, i like the finish of yours, but im a huge jimmy page fan, soo biggrin.gif

I want to add that I also think that you must have a les paul Adrian!!! biggrin.gif

I know man!, i love the tone, the looks and the feel of you LP, that's the only reason i started to consider the studios, i think i just have to try try and try, thanks for the reply man.

Hahahaha, i need to have one biggrin.gif

With as much as you have contributed to this site since near the beginning, I think GMC should buy you a standard, a pretty one like Marcus S. has. The teachers here are super, but nobody has contributed more than you, because there is so much variety in your lessons, and you play so well, clean and with great rhythm. My advice to anyone new here, don't just focus on recent lessons, dig into the older stuff, such as what Gabriel has offered.

Ohhh +1, gabriel's lessons are amazing!

I've got a Les Paul studio i bought back in .. 1994? i think.
Not sure if the Studios were made in different specs back then, but it's an awesome, awesome guitar that i should use more often.
In my opinion it sounds as good as and feels the same as the Standards i've tried.
