It's like buying a CD as compared to downloading music .. the feeling of holding something in your hand.
But the content online has pretty much wiped out the info in mags...

What are your thoughts? Do you subscribe to any? Which one and why ??

Yes, Im a bit old school as I remember some experiences of learning songs from audio cassettes and guitar mags when internet was not so widespread but over the years I've turned to the internet completely ... But now I miss the mags.. sad.gif .. Are they still in good business?

To be honest, I bought a couple of guitar mags once, and I just didn't find reading them interesting. I think the difference with the internet is there is a much wider range of people (and their opinions) to look at. I tended to find that the opinions taken by the writers in the magazines rarely reflected my own opinions, probably just because there were only 2 or 3 writers, so it's difficult to cover everyone. However, on the internet there are thousands of writers, so it's easy to find articles/info from people who have similar tastes to my own.

I guess print magazines just can't compete with the internet, especially with mobile web taking off in a big way.

Although saying that, you can still find your magazines online, the companies that print the mags aren't gonna just go bust, they'll switch to online content. All that will change is the delivery mechanism. But on top of that you get all the other junk the internet has to offer smile.gif

I never liked guitar magazines. Always thought there was to many ads, and to little that could catch my interest. Of course without Internet, situation would most probably be different.

Well, I recently thought about buying a magazine again, but then I looked it up online and found litarally all the information I wanted online...so I didn't have to buy the mag. I know what I am looking for or what I want to read, so I search the web for it. In mags, there are so many things that aren't interesting to me, so it's just not worth buying for me.

I Guess the only reason I look at the mags would be for band interviews mostly. But they cost quite alot.

I buy my CD's and DVD's. I subscribe to one manazine and buy another every month, never read them off of the internet. And least but not last, I'm in love with a real woman too.

I'm less cyber and more an IRL kind of guy wink.gif

Ya, its just the way it is I guess .. I was looking at a mag today and was wondering all these things.. I dont know why but I was even enjoying the advertisements in it laugh.gif

@MickeM - Had to look up what IRL meant tongue.gif .. Which mags do you subscribe to ? If someone was to still give them a shot, which one do you recommend ?

Swedesh mags, in swedish, so my guess is they won't fly down under. A guitar paper called Fuzz and a studio oriented one called Studio.

And another advantage of magazines. You can't bring your laptop to the John! biggrin.gif

Classic quote! laugh.gif

I still buy guitar mags, in particular Guitarist magazine which has a great blend of gear, reviews, techniques etc I just find it more exciting to get a mag than read a wiki page, plus with the plethora of info on the net its nice to have a reliable and proven source of info in an established mag with good writers, not everything you need is in cyberspace!

I ordered a 12 month subscription to Guitar World when I was in the Civilian Service (non-military service), so I didn't have to pay for it. About once a month I get it in the mail, but there rarely is any interesting in them now. There is a great GMC forum where I can talk and ask about anything I have on my mind, the tabs that follows is tabs that I can find anywhere on the internet. News I've already heard on places like this. Left is the interviews. I don't get them anywhere but in the magazines, but I never really get down to read them, except on the toilet. tongue.gif But same as Sted, it's nice to have a more reliable source than the internet. smile.gif

+1.
I still buy Guitarist for the same reasons. I also buy Guitar Techniques on occasion to.
I still remember before the Innerwebs when you bought a magazine and it DIDN'T come with a CD/Tape/Floppy Disc (as in 'Record' not a PC related item!!) and so you had no idea as to what you were learning should sound like unless you already knew the track!!!

I love the German "Guitar" magazine, but I also check out the online versions of some other american magazines. I don't see why I should not read both, but I definitely prefer a real printed mag. It is just like with books, I love them, collect them, and I couldn't care less about those digital book readers.

Never bought a guitar magazine, even before the internet-tubes covered the world.

I used to buy many mags after the "internet explotion" I remember I was always looking for those mags which contained some guitar licks on it, or X guitar player I liked was giving some explanation or so.
but with the internet at hand, and with the fact I spent so many hours in front of the computer, I am not buying them anymore.
different thing happens to me about books tho. as Marcus said, I am a collector too, and I can't read an entire book from the screen. so, every month I buy one or two new books.

"Guitar Techniques" is quite good one. Not many ads and nice material for playing. I used to be a big fan of that mag but I'm not buying it anymore. Probably because I have all that online. I must admit that sometimes is much easier for me to read notes from the paper than on the screen.

yeah Guitar Techniques is the best one by far as it actually teaches you something.

I pick it up when the content looks interesting, only problem is with stuff I have to learn for work, then stuff I do with bands, then stuff on here leaves me with little time to sit down and do the mag... am sure i'll get round to it one day!!

I used to have the subscription to the Bass Player Magazine...Nowadays you can find any info on the internet but It can't replace professional articles and readying from actual paper not computer monitor smile.gif

Reading from paper is cool, I love magazines, but buy only PC related ones, 2 per month. Guitar ones are cool when I check them out, but they are usually more-ads-than-useful-articles like.
