Hey guys. A friend of me gave me a cheap fake of the strat. IT's called a spectrum. But anyways I have no trouble stringing my Ibanez, or my friends Strat which is pretty much exactly the same as the spectrum. Now heres the problem when I try to take the strings out the ball at the bottom of the string is jammed into the thing so I cant take it out. What do I do? Do I use a lubricant like WD-40?

This is the biggest WTF OMFG moment ever. "Stick with the basics for about a year and a half"? NO DAMN WAY. I've only been playing since christmas, that's when I got my guitar, and that's when I got serious. I started out playing alot of In Flames, and messing around with tons of shred movements all the time. Needless to say, my playing would be awful crap if I "Stuck with the basics for a year and a half". All ego aside, I know that I would be a horrible guitar player if I didn't try harder stuff. Right now, I can already play metallica, Iron Maiden, In Flames, and children of bodom, after only a few months of play. Sticking with the basics will slow your progress. You absolutly have to play hard stuff all the time to increase skill. Try blending it with basic exercizes to increase your fingerwork, but play alot of tough stuff to, well, GET GOOD.

Oh, and about the restringing, try a small amount of WD40, and get some needle nose pliars to push the string out, don't try to grip it and pull, just try to push it out with the pliars closed.

EDIT: I would also like to enforce kris' "There is no such thing as talent" saying. It's totally true. When I first picked up my guitar, my hand was no less than retarded beyond all comprehension. I MADE myself play good, through complete determination. I ALWAYS think about my technique, and how I can improve it, alot of the time when I'm not even playing.
