SATURDAY LESSON PREVIEW:

Here is a clip for part of a Backing track that I"m working on for this Saturday's upcoming VIDEO CHAT lesson. It's called Canonical Decompostion. (Deconstructing/de"composing" Canon "Accepted Works")

It contains several techniques we are going to work on by learning the parts involved.
*Sweep Picking
*Double Picking
*Alternate Picking
*Economic PIcking

It's based loosely on a Minor/Harmonic Minor Arpeggio grouping. Enjoy! See you Sat!

Congrats on getting it down! smile.gif Try playing it with a metronome or backing drum track for the recording so that you can see where it's rushing/dragging. The first two notes after the initial open string are in fact separate notes as written but could be played as a slide like your doing as well smile.gif

This is a somewhat complicated little riff so it's great to hear people getting it!

I'm planning to cover the "OVER HAND TAPPING" technique in this Saturday's Video Chat Lesson so here is a quick video demo. It's actually a very simple technique once you get the hang of it smile.gif I"m using it in this video for my take of Daniel Realpe's recent Metal Collab.

Also, I never pick up the pick once I start here which is also something interesting to try if your not used to it. You can do pinch harmonics and other things using just your fingers.

Give "OVERHAND TAPPING" a try after watching this vid. Start small and slow. It's hard at first but gets easier quick. It'll give you some prep for this Sat! We are going to use it in a solo.

VIDEO CHAT LESSON #61 - NOTES

LESSON #61 (Inside / Outside Picking and Working Your Stretch!)

Let’s focus again on our picking. In this lesson, we will take advantage of some of our previous picking work and work we have been doing to increase our flexibility. If you have missed a few lessons, don’t worry, you should have no problem playing everything we are going to cover today without prior exposure.

WORK YOUR STRETCH
Watch this short video for some examples of some handy "Finger Yoga"!

WORK YOUR PICKING!!
Here is the first set of tablature. This lick is going to be played later on in the lesson against a backing track so you can see how in sounds “In Context.

(Click below to download the Guitar Pro 5 File for 61a)
Attached File  61a_3_4.gp5 ( 1.67K ) Number of downloads: 190

Attached Image

Let’s take that same shape and work on adding Alternate Picking / Economic Picking and see if we can work our speed up a bit. You can use either Alternate or Economic Picking here depending on what feels better for you.

(Click below to download the Guitar Pro 5 File for 61b)
Attached File  61b_3_4.gp5 ( 1.74K ) Number of downloads: 168

Now lets add a Pentatonic Lick to our work. This too will be played against the backing.

VIDEO CHAT LESSON #62 - NOTES

GMC VIDEO CHAT LESSON #62 - Quadruple Picking!

Let’s add “Quadruple Picking” technique to our back of licks/tricks. This is very simply, four pick strokes per note. This will help you with your ‘Inside and Outside Picking”, and your “Alternate Picking”. This lesson is all about PRECISION. Not so much about speed. As they say....

“Speed is a byproduct of precision”.

Let’s warmup and get started.
*Do our usual Finger Yoga and warmup your hand/arm. Avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! Here is the link for the Finger Yoga Video again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POvVMNdc6Tg

Here is a preview of what this lesson will sound like once you have it down.

Attached File  Lesson62A_example.mp3 ( 1.3MB ) Number of downloads: 265

We are going to use some “Sweep Shapes” from a previous lesson to leverage time you have already invested learning them. Hopefully, this will let you focus on the picking and less on the shape. For each one of these shapes, play each note four time. Thus "Quadruple Picking". Play with a metronome as slow as needed until you can play fast enough to play it with the backing just like in the example.

*Here is a link to the backing without the quad pick lead for you to download and practice with.

Attached File  Lesson62A_BackingOnly.mp3 ( 1.3MB ) Number of downloads: 132

As a bonus, let’s work on improvising just a bit. Here is a backing track made with an iPod app called GROOVE MAKER (Rock Pack). Here is a link about the software. It’s great for having backings ready to go. (Sadly there is no PC version yet just runs on iphone/ipod/ipad)
http://www.groovemaker.com/rockace/

This is link to the backing.
Attached File  62_Bonus.mp3 ( 4.13MB ) Number of downloads: 144

This backing is in E and has a Minor feel to it. So E Minor, E Harmonic Minor, E Pentatonic, etc. will all sound great. We have tons of licks that we’ve covered that will work well on this backing. Improvise and see what you can come up with!

Practice!

GMC VIDEO CHAT LESSON 63 - Notes

GMC VIDEO CHAT LESSON #63 - Economic Picking In Context

Let’s warmup and get started. *
Do our usual Finger Yoga and warmup your hand/arm.* Let’s take a look at increasing our overall speed. We have spent a lot of time on Alternate Picking. Let’s spend a bit of time focused on “Economic Picking”. If you find your speed has hit a wall, workng your Economic Picking can help you break through the speed barrier. Let’s use a familiar shape and focus on using two down strokes in a row as we traverse to higher strings. Just to keep things challenging, let’s also work on our stretch a bit as we go. Let’s

look at our first shape. Make sure to try to start with a downstroke, and then use another downstroke when moving to a higher string. This is the essence of "Economic Picking" using more than one stroke type in sequence. Eg. Two downstrokes.

63a
*Here is the Guitar Pro 5 File for this shape.
Attached File  63a.gp5 ( 1.54K ) Number of downloads: 181

Attached Image

Let’s extend this idea over several strings.

63b
*Here is the Guitar Pro 5 File for this shape.
Attached File  63b.gp5 ( 1.83K ) Number of downloads: 177

Attached Image

Now lets take a pattern from LESSON 42 and add some Economic Picking focus and play it with our backing track as a solo lick after we master it with a metronome.

63c
*No Guitar Pro for this one, try to create your own Guitar Pro File as a test.
Attached Image

Here is our backing track for today.
Attached File  Lesson63_Backing.mp3 ( 2.33MB ) Number of downloads: 216

Try to get the shapes down to where you can play them over the backing. You can play fast or slow, just make sure it's consistent.

Practice!
Todd

VIDEO CHAT LESSON #64 - NOTES

LESSON 64 - Mixing and Matching (Alternate Picking and Economic Picking)

In this lesson, we are going to mix and match our picking a bit. We are going to combine, single and fretted strokes with double open string strokes. This creates a very percussive sound and harkens back to our Pedal Tone / Pedal Point lesson. The big difference is a one to two ratio of fretted to open string strikes.

We are going to use Ben Higgins KILLER collaboration track HIGH RISK as a backing. (With his permission of course). Here is a link to the Final Video on Youtube
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/set-the-pace/

Here is an example of the some of the licks we are going to work on today, taken from this Collab.

*Let’s warmup and get started. Do our usual Finger Yoga and warmup your hand/arm.*

First, let’s let our picking hand get used to today's first pattern. Once you have it down, play it with a metronome to keep it even and consistent.
*Here is the Guitar Pro 5 File for this shape.
Attached Image

Now let’s add a scale in to it. This pattern will work as played against a backing as a solo lick and as an alternate picking workout. It will also work on every string. This is STRICT alternate picking. NO ECONOMIC picking for this one.
*Here is the Guitar Pro 5 File for this shape.
Attached File  64b.gp5 ( 2.18K ) Number of downloads: 134

Attached Image

Now let’s go the other way. Let’s do an ascending patter up the neck past fret 12.
*Here is the Guitar Pro 5 File for this shape.
Attached File  64c.gp5 ( 2.02K ) Number of downloads: 166

Attached Image

BONUS:
As our bonus lick, let’s keep with our Alternate Picking / Single String idea but let’s not do a Pedal Point lick. Instead, let’s change shapes as we move up the neck without using a Pedal Tone.
Attached File  64d.gp5 ( 1.65K ) Number of downloads: 181

Attached Image

Now based on this, try to figure out the reverse pattern on one string. After that, try to figure out how to do this ascending and descending, using a standard Minor Scale Shape instead of one string. Try to use your ear for this.

Here is the killer backing track Ben created. Play these chops over top of this and let your fingers fly!

LESSON 65 - Pushing Past The “Barrier”

We have been focusing on various techniques for the past few lessons and It seems high time we get back to a quick bit of shredding/back and forth/speed picking. The ideas here should be somewhat familiar at this point. Hopefully, we will be able to push our speed up a bit in this lesson as the shapes will hopefully be quick to master. Once we have them down, we will apply them a backing so that we can play them in context. First, let’s do our warmup, per usual. Then on to the Lesson!

For each of these next three shapes/chops, learn the pattern and play it with a metronome to keep it steady. Once you have built up some speed and feel comfortable with the licks, start playing them with the backing track and turn off the metronome. Here is our backing track for today. Download it and give it a listen before starting on learning the shapes/chops.

Attached File  Lesson65v3.mp3 ( 1.79MB ) Number of downloads: 176

Let’s add a bit to this idea. Some string traverse will work the fingers a bit. Scroll down for the next tablature.

Now let’s add the final bits that turn this in to a lick we can play with or without out backing.

This riff is about pure speed. All the notes are close together so you should be able to work up some scary quick speed on this. It also works as a lick with our backing.

VIDEO CHAT LESSON 66 - NEO CLASSICAL APPROACHES

We have been Working our speed up focusing on our right hand for several lessons now. Let’s shift a bit and focus on our left hand. We are still going to use our Synch approach, meaning or every pick stroke, a note is fretted. This will help our “Precision”. As has often been said, “Speed is a byproduct of precision”.

Let’s look at our backing track. It’s composed of a variety of shapes and will require a decent finger stretch as well as dexterity of movement. Here is an MP3 Preview. Once you learn the following licks, play them with a metronome until you have them down, then play them with the backing. Go ahead and warm up doing our usual stretches and listen to backing.

Attached File  GMC66_Doxologia_Minor.mp3 ( 1.32MB ) Number of downloads: 216

Let's take a look at our shapes. The first part of each is repeated when played with the backing, but in the tab, it's just shown once for simplicity sake.

GMC VIDEO CHAT LESSON #67 - Notes

LESSON #67 - Sweet Spots, Dirty Spots

Let’s warmup and get started.
*Do our usual Finger Yoga and warmup your hand/arm. Here is the link to the Video demonstration.
https://www.youtube.com/user/toddsquadxyz#p/u/12/POvVMNdc6Tg

In this lesson, let’s combine some techniques and approaches together to create some dynamics in our playing. We have spent a lot of time working playing precise, almost mechanical phrases to help us learn to play with consistency. Now let’s throw in some bends and holds to mix things up a bit. Listen to todays backing track while you warm up and stretch.

Our first lick is a traditional Rock/Blues lick that works well just about anywhere you use it as long as it’s key. Our backing track is in the Key of E so our licks today will be in E as well.

Attached File  67SignumCrucis.mp3 ( 3.75MB ) Number of downloads: 189

67a
Let’s play this with a metronome about 120 BPM to make sure we can play it smoothly and consistently. This is the first lick to play against the backing. Once you can loop this lick it’s a great chop to use and repeat.
*Here is the GuitarPro file for this shape (GuitarPro5 or 6 Required)
Attached File  67a.gp5 ( 1.8K ) Number of downloads: 160

Attached Image

67b
Now let’s throw in a lick that’s a little more syncopated and scale based. This is a lick based on E-Minor and uses our “Back and Forh” approach. This next bit has a lot of notes. But once you get the idea behind the pattern down, hopefully it won’t be that hard to master. Don’t be thrown off by how big the tablature looks. It’s only because of the notes repeating.
*Here is the GuitarPro file for this shape (GuitarPro5 or 6 Required)
Attached File  67b_final.gp5 ( 2.37K ) Number of downloads: 168

Attached Image

67c
Now let’s take a different approach to create something that sounds very similar. Instead of using a scale pattern and traversing strings, let’s focus on a single string ascending shape but avoid the use of open strings.
*Here is the GuitarPro file for this shape (GuitarPro5 or 6 Required)

GMC VIDEO CHAT LESSON #68 - Building A Solo
In this lesson, we are going to build a Guita Solo and play it against a backing. So essentially we are going to chain sets of licks/chops together in as musical a way as possible. Before we get in to it, let’s warm up a bit and get our fingers ready to rip!
FINGER YOGA!
Let’s do our usual Finger Yoga stretches. Here is a link to the video for references.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POvVMNdc6Tg
PALM MUTED HAMMER ON’S
Let’s do a bit o prep for our first lick by doing some “Palm Muted Hammer On’s” This type of lick just takes a little practice. Once you have it down, it comes in very handy for building a cool solo. The Palm muting creates a percussive sound and takes the place of the pick stroke. Here is our first tablature.
Attached Image

Now that we have the pattern down. Let’s play it with a metronome to make sure we can play it consistently and work up some speed and move it around the neck.
Now let’s take that same idea nd turn it in to an actual lick that conforms to a scale structure. Our Backing track is in E Minor so let’s use an E Minor Shape. Take a look at the next piece of Tablature.

Now let’s add a different type of lick in to our Solo. After a syncopated scale run type of lick, loosening things up with a Pedal Point, Open String Lick can often work quite well. Let’s do an open string “Pedal Point” style lick where the open string is our “Pedal Tone”.
Take a look at the tablature. Once we have it, let’s play it on every string to give our hand some practice on it.

Now, let’s string these licks together and play them as a solo against a backing. Here is what it should sound like. Click on the link below to be taken to SOUNDCLOUD.com for a preview.

Once we have this solo down, think back to last weeks lesson. It was in the same key as this lesson. E Minor. Try to remember the licks we did. All of them will work with this backing. So now, let’s improvise. Take all the licks from this week, and the licks you remember from last week, and mix and match them against the backing. Play them in any order and cycle them as many times as you think it sounds right to do.
You are building up yoru “Bag of Tricks/Licks” and eventually, as long as you know the key, you can whip out a solo on the spot.

GMC LESSON 69 - Building A Solo, Employing Previous Techniques

In this lesson, we are going to build a Guitar Solo and play it against a backing (The Backing is the Metal Collab recently initiated by Cosmin Lupu, here is my full solo take as a preview.

Here is a link to the audio file of backing with solo for download and reference.

Attached File  CosminCollab_ToddWithBacking.mp3 ( 2.76MB ) Number of downloads: 188

*IMPORTANT: The song is written in the key of “C Minor”, but we are going to tune up half a step so that our open string licks will work here and our previous several lessons will match up with this as well. So tune your B string to a C.

let’s warm up a bit and get our fingers ready to rip!

FINGER YOGA!

Let’s do our usual Finger Yoga stretches. Here is a link to the video for references.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POvVMNdc6Tg

*We are going to do a series of increasingly complex licks. These will help your hands get used to changing shapes each time they move.

OPEN STRING, PALM MUTED, PEDAL POINT, ASCENDING MINOR SCALE (Pedal +2)

Take a look at our first tablature. The Easiest of the bunch.

Here is the Guitar Pro Tablature File.

Now let’s play this with a metronome a bit, back and forth and then once we have it, let’s do it with the backing track.

Let’s add a third note in.

And the Guitar Pro Tablature File.

Now let’s invert this pattern and try it with the metronome, working up some speed, then transfer to the backing track.

And the Guitar Pro Tablature File.

Attached File  69c.gp5 ( 1.93K ) Number of downloads: 121

Now let’s add some tapping/hammering in to things. This is a great way to work up some serious speed.

And the Guitar Pro Tablature File.

Let’s add another note to this. It really starts to rip as a four note tap.

Now move your right hand around to find other spots on the neck that are in key while leaving your left hand doing this pattern.
