Last time during our chat we came up with an impromptu lesson that broke down the basics of "Double Picking" (picking each note of a pattern/scale twice). And everyone got it! So I"ve made a couple of quick bits to canonize the event. It makes the whole thing seem way easy!

THE SECRET: The secret to double picking is to separate your hands in your mind and start your right hand picking just at a constant speed. To this point, we are going to pick without moving our left hand. Just bar the notes in this example.

DOUBLE PICK DEMO

Very simple and now your double picking! You know what it means and you know how to do it! Congrats smile.gif

Attached File  DoubleDemo.gp5 ( 1.52K ) Number of downloads: 163

Now let's add one simple finger motion and your "Double Picking" a shape.

Attached File  DoubleDemo2.gp5 ( 1.62K ) Number of downloads: 164

That's all there is to it smile.gif Now let's add a SLIDE to our Alternate Picking work and then, Double, then TRIPLE PICK IT!

SLIDING ALTERNATE PICKING

FIrst up! Single String, Minor Pattern, Alternate Picked. (Alternate Each Pick Strike!) Lets

-Try it on different Strings
-Palm Mute it

TRIPLE PICKING

Let's TRIPLE PICK this same pattern. Just pick each note three times, as it's tabbed.

-Double Pick
-Try it on different Strings
-Palm Mute it

INVERSIONS IN CONTEXT WITH ALTERNATE PICKING ( A MIinor)

We've been working on our ALTERNATE PICKING and we have worked on INVERSIONS. Let's combine these. Each SINGLE PICK workout is meant for Strict Alternate Picking (No Economic or Legato). When we move to DOUBLE PICK sections in the tablature, all bets are off and any way that works for your hand works for the bit.

Here we go!
-Keep the thumb in the center of the neck if possible.
-Use a sharp pick if possible.
-Sit in "classical" position if possible.
-Palm Mute EVERYTHING.

Play these with a metronome and keep good form. Once you get used to the pattern move it around and see about increasing precision and speed. This last bit will work as a solo lick for any Song/Section in the key of A Minor or A Pentatonic.

Practice!

P.S. Using a NEW PICK today. Vinnie made me some Custom "Black" Switchblade Buffed/Sharpened Picks. I love these. These would make a GREAT training pick even if you just used them during our lessons and when working on AP training.

(These are CUSTOM made at this point and not on the menu at the web site. I'm hoping he makes them a permanent product as he did with the original switchblade buffed that he'd customized )

PEDAL TONE AND LINEAR SCALES

We have worked on "Pedal Tones" in the past so this should be familiar. "Pedal Point/Tone" is a Baroque Classical technique of returning to a single note while playing a scale. Seen often in Beethoven's Fuge pieces for example.

Let's look at our first shape. Single string, STRICT Alternate Picking!

-Let's try this on other strings as well.

Attached File  114a.gp5 ( 1.8K ) Number of downloads: 131

Attached Image

Now Let's combine SINGLE and DOUBLE PICK STRIKES!

-Let's again try it on other strings.

Attached File  114b.gp5 ( 1.99K ) Number of downloads: 151

Attached Image

Now let's DOUBLE PICK all of it.

-Let's again try it on other strings.

Attached File  114c.gp5 ( 2.18K ) Number of downloads: 144

Attached Image

Now let's Reverse it!

Attached File  114d.gp5 ( 1.8K ) Number of downloads: 152

Attached Image

-Let's again try it on other strings.

Reverse with Single/Double Pick

-Let's again try it on other strings.

Attached File  114e.gp5 ( 1.99K ) Number of downloads: 148

Attached Image

Reverse all Double Pick

Attached File  114f.gp5 ( 2.18K ) Number of downloads: 139

Attached Image

Now the BOSS LEVEL! Down and Back!

-Let's again try it on other strings.
-Let's Double Pick it!

Attached File  114g.gp5 ( 2.18K ) Number of downloads: 139

Attached Image

Well done! smile.gif

ECONOMIC PICKING

*Let's work on our "Economic Picking" a bit today. This is about using two strokes of similar type in sequence. In this case, two DOWN STROKES to start the bit off.

*To keep it from being too easy/boring, there is a bit of a STREEEEEETTTTCCHH! smile.gif

Attached File  115a.gp5 ( 1.53K ) Number of downloads: 133

Attached Image

Let's
-March it up and down the neck (All the way to the first fret, EARN IT!)

VS DOUBLE PICKING

Let's "Double Pick" this same shape. Pick twice per note. Let's ALTERNATE PICK this and notice how it feels different.

Let's
-March it up and down the neck (All the way to the first fret, EARN IT!)

TURNING UP THE WICK A BIT (AND ADDING INVERSIONS FOR FUN)
Let's try a shape that has TWO ECONOMIC bits in it. One bit with TWO DOWNSTROKES and another bit with TWO UPSTROKES. You should be comfy with Economic picking for Down and Upstrokes. And for added fun, let's toss in some of our INVERSION work from last time. Here goes!

Let's
-March it up and down the neck (All the way to the first fret, EARN IT!)

CRAZY TOWN: DOUBLE PICKING WITH INVERSIONS

WARMING UP TO THE NEW SHAPE

This should be familiar. Just a bit different shape.

Attached File  116a.gp5 ( 1.48K ) Number of downloads: 140

Attached Image

-Use Two Down Strokes for the first two notes.
-Hammer on and pull off with the pinky for the next two.

-Let's march this up the neck.

IT'S COMPLICATED

Last lesson we worked on TRIADS and TRIPEGGIOS a bit. This time, we are going to play some patterns that are a bit more complex. Let's dig in.

Attached File  116b.gp5 ( 1.53K ) Number of downloads: 146

Attached Image

-Notice there are TWO SETS OF ECONOMIC PICKING STROKES
-Two down strokes, then later, two up strokes. (Try to keep this strict, it will help you loop this pattern)

-Let's march this up the neck.

IT'S MORE COMPLICATED

Let's turn up the wick. Try to use two down strokes to start, but after that follow your own instincts and see if the outcome feels comfortable. Hopefully by now, your developing a "Sense of Picking".

Attached File  116c.gp5 ( 1.52K ) Number of downloads: 140

Attached Image

-Let's march this up the neck.

IT'S REALLY COMPLICATED

Let's make it a bit more interesting.

Attached File  116d.gp5 ( 1.6K ) Number of downloads: 141

Attached Image

-Let's move it down the neck.

COMPLEXITY IS FUN

It will start sounding a bit like an etude now. Here we go.

Attached File  116e.gp5 ( 1.82K ) Number of downloads: 158

Attached Image

-And march it around.

NOW IT SEEMS SIMPLE!

By now our hardest bit will seem easy!

Attached File  116e.gp5 ( 1.82K ) Number of downloads: 158

Attached Image

And let's play each bit twice, which will make it easier to loop.

Attached File  116f.gp5 ( 2.12K ) Number of downloads: 147

Attached Image

BONUS ROUND!

For BONUS POINTS/HOMEWORK POINTS, Double Pick (Strike Twice Per Note) 116E. You RAWK

PREPPING TO SHRED!

There are many "Tricks to the Trade" in Shredding. It's a broader term than you might think. Much like how "Djent" became it's own Genre, Shred has evolved over time. It still has a connotation of fast/semi crazy/yet precise playing.

One (of many) ways to achieve this "sound" is to make use of repeated notes. When played at speed, notes in a scale can be repeated in certain ways and yet sound almost like new notes being played. That's what we will explore today. Let's get started.

Here is our first shape. Follow your instincts on picking here. Try to Alternate Pick and feel free to use economic where it works for you. By now, after 100 + lessons, hopefully the mechanics of picking are sinking in.

Let's
-Play this at various speeds
-March it up and down the neck

QUIZ: What scale does this bring to mind?

FINGER SHIFTING

TH1 TH2 PATCH FOR TODAY

Attached File  120TH1_TH2.xml.zip ( 8.01K ) Number of downloads: 146

After chasing off most everyone last week with our insanity, I thought I'd impart a bit more spiff and a bit less HELL in to this lesson. These are licks that will help you gain precision/speed/agility, and they leverage the work you've done on your left hand. We don't have to pick each and every note here and we don't have to do an 8 fret stretch. So we are still gonna work it, but hopefully in a way that everyone can dig.

FIRST UP!

STRIKE ONCE HAMMER MANY

For this shape, strike only the OPEN STRING and hammer on the rest. Lets work up some speed here.

****YES THOSE ARE SIXTEENTH NOTES!!!!!!!!

Attached File  120a.gp5 ( 1.63K ) Number of downloads: 142

Attached Image

STRIKE ONCE HAMMER VERY MANY

One of my fav "Shredder Tricks" is to use repeated notes to give a nice busy feel to a given lick. Don't over use this. But give it a shot in this modification of our first lick (Still strike only the open string). Again, YES THOSE ARE SIXTEENTH NOTES! smile.gif YOU CAN DO IT SOLDIER!

Attached File  120b.gp5 ( 1.72K ) Number of downloads: 145

Attached Image

STRIKE ONCE HAMMER MANY THEN GO BACK AND FORTH

Another "Shredder Trick" is our "Back and Forth" technique where we back track in a given scale then move forward again. Let's apply that to our bit that we've been working with.

Attached File  120c.gp5 ( 1.82K ) Number of downloads: 140

Attached Image

Now for the bit that's actually a Scale. A PENTATONIC to be exact. More of our open bits, strike only on the open string. Now try to see how we can add the other bits we've learned to this pattern?

THIS WEEKS CUSTOM GUITAR PATCH!

FIRST UP!

Alterate picking licks can work in Lead and Rythm playing. Let's examine our "Back and Forth" technique and play a pattern that might be used in a solo or as a looped practice lick to help our SHRED.

Attached File  121a.gp5 ( 1.59K ) Number of downloads: 130

Attached Image

Let's
-March it up the neck
-Try it on different string
-Palm mute it

DOUBLE YOUR FUN!

That was too easy! Let's DOUBLE PICK (Strike every note twice) the same shape. Here is a vid to show what your hand should be doing when you DOUBLE PICK. Look at the angle of the right hand, notice how it's not overly tense and doesn't look angry like it's trying to break the strings. Also notice how little movement there is at speed.

Attached File  121a_double.gp5 ( 1.77K ) Number of downloads: 131

Let's
-March it up the neck
-Try it on different string

TRIPLE THREAT

Let's TRIPLE PICK this pattern (Three stikes per note)

Here is how it will sound played at speed.

NINJA SECRETS OF SHRED

One of the big "Secrets" of being able to play with precision/speed is having a really strong left hand. As Paul Gilbert will tell you, you don't have to pick every note, as long it sounds like you are picking every note your fine". As I've said some folks may say this is "Cheating" but as guitar is not a board game we will just leave that .

First Up!

***USING THE LEFT HAND ONLY
-Strike with the finger tip
-Turn up your gain a bit
-try using one of the custom patches

Attached File  122a.gp5 ( 1.49K ) Number of downloads: 123

Attached Image

Let's

-Play it twice then move up one fret to 12th.
-Play it four times move up one fret to 12th
-Stretch our fingers and start on the First Fret
-Try it on other strings
(keep it clean by playing with a Metronome)

Next Up!

Let's add our STRETCH in to things!

-Turn up your gain a bit
-try using one of the custom patches

Attached File  122b.gp5 ( 1.49K ) Number of downloads: 125

Attached Image

Let's

-Play it twice then move up one fret to 12th.
-Play it four times move up one fret to 12th
-Stretch our fingers and start on the First Fret
-Try it on other strings
(keep it clean by playing with a Metronome)

Here's Where It Gets Tricky!

Let's use our left hand technique on a real scale. Left hand hammer on only! Palm mute to reduce noise.

Attached File  122c.gp5 ( 1.69K ) Number of downloads: 123

Attached Image

Let's

-Loop the pattern (repeat it)
-Try it different places on the neck.

Here's Where It Get's REALLY Tricky

Attached File  122d.gp5 ( 1.69K ) Number of downloads: 113

Attached Image

Let's

-Loop the pattern (repeat it)
-Try it different places on the neck.

THE FINAL CHALLENGE!

All this work was to prepare you for this next bit. We are going to play a full scale, all the way, using our "Back and Forth" technique as well as our "Left Hand Only" technique. It's tabbed in 16th notes but that's more of a goal than anything else.

Attached File  122e.gp5 ( 1.83K ) Number of downloads: 135

Attached Image

Try to play these patterns a bit each time you practice. It will really help your left hand which will really help your playing.
Practice!

Prep and A were the same bit just moved around to a different fret. We didn't have a C that week sad.gif But we will next week! To reduce any confusion, I just added "move around the neck " to the first one.

*DON"T WORRY ABOUT PICKING EVERY NOTE (This is about the left hand remember?)

THE LEFT HAND BLITZ

The left hand is the foundation of your playing. The right hand, while important, can't make up for a lack of left hand power or precision. So let's challenge our left hand and FEEL THE BLITZ!

PRE BLITZ

Let's start with something that won't chase everyone off. We will work up from there.

ECONOMIC ASCENT

People often ask how I manage to get decent speed during scale runs. The trick for me is using Economic Picking to ascend, and alternate to descend. Let's ascend.

And of course......
