Hello Staffay,
We continue our work for April in this thread. As I mentioned to you before, I will be going to Vienna to do gig there with Oliver Katic. I will be gone for 4 days so I decided to post you all assignments in advance for this month. We will see how you do, depending on time we might be able to change them and add more things. Here are your assignments for April : Assignment 1 : Jazz standard, melody and solo - Pick a Jazz standard of your choice and record yourself playing melody one chorus followed by one chorus of solo. - Tempo is your choice and you can also choose to record background music anyway you want it or even use already existing backing tracks (Aebersold or Band in a Box for example). - Try to do everything in original key as it was written in the real book! - Some suggestions for easy to intermediate Jazz standards : Blue Bossa, Blue Monk, Straight no chaser, All the things you are, Autumn Leaves, All of me, Take the a train etc - Submit audio of your work but video with audio is also very welcome for this assignment. Assignment 2 : Arpeggio study in Bb major scale - Record (at least) audio of yourself playing Arpeggio study in Bb major scale lesson found HERE - Use the backing track provided bellow Assignment 3 : Michael Brecker solo 2nd chorus "Suspone" -Transcribe 2nd chorus of Michael Brecker's solo on "Suspone" - Submit transcription and video of your performance Assignment 4 and REC : Jazz licks II-V-I in D major - Record video of yourself playing Jazz licks II-V-I in D major lesson found HERE - After you record it, submit it in this thread as well as in REC for grading (make sure to include voting poll) - Use the backing track provided below. Deadline for all 4 assignments and REC is 30th of April! Let me know if you have any questions or need any help. Pedja

Hi Pedja, here is the arpeggio study:
I've been working with the backing on the "Fusion Collab", check the uploads section. It would be nice with some comments here from You! Regarding the other assignments, I dont see any big issues as by now, I think I will be in time. //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. Oh, no problem Pedja! I know how it is to be a busy musician! I'm glad that everything went OK for You in Vienna, and it will be nice to see some shots from the DVD later! Yeah, I know bout the G-minor, and it still disturbs me...... Right now I'm practicing "Yesterdays" as part of the assignments, and I'm planning to do two versions of it, one with a more "written" solo and one with free playing. The only problems I'm facing so far is the usual one's - the jazz timing, and the one with the latency in my gear. I simply can't figure this out, it sounds OK when I play and on the video-cam, but then in Cubase it sounds horrible. I guess that 4-5 ms. really matters in some way, even that people say that its not noticeable. The first problem may simply be adjusted with some practice on AP-picking, I guess. The second one just drives me mad, and I'm longing for my portastudio.....

Yeeooww, that was cool Pedja. Guitar duo is most fun! I remember doin that a lot with a friend of mine when I was at college, playing standards and such. Btw. there is a great duo recording of John Scofield/John Abercrombie from the beginning of the 80'ths, have You heard that one?
Regarding the Soundcard, I really have an awesome one, I was speaking more in general here - I just can't get the timing to fit 100%, no matter which soundcar I use, but on the videocam it sounds like I REALLY played it. Strange, isn't it??? //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. The software I use is Amazing Slow Downer (actually written by a friend/former guitar teacher Rolf Nilsson, a very skilled Swedish Jazz Player), You can find it here: http://www.ronimusic.com/ Its priced 49.95, and its worth every penny!
The record I speak about is very uncommon and is entitled "Solar". I dont know if its available on CD anymore, I got it on vinyl and managed to get some MP3's of it from a friend. Anyway, there is some awsome & beautiful playing by both of them on standard tunes mostly. //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. Thanks a lot Staffay! I will try to get the software in next couple of days. Plan to do some heavy transcribing on my own, it might come in handy. Got some really cool VST's yesterday (Trilogy and Battery 3) so I will mess around with them until I get some brass/woodwinds/strings VST sounds for arranging. I plan to do some 4 part arranging for trumpet and saxes, it should be lots of fun, can't wait to get going with it. When I do something, I will post it here on forum for you to hear. Look forward to the rest of assignments man! Pedja Yeah, I have both Battery and Trilogy myself, they are cool, but I must say that I prefer the new Trilian - the Patitucci upright bass is amazing.... Regarding drums I found myself using sample-CD's of real drummers instead of VST-instruments (in jazz music, when it comes to "beat" it doesn't matter really imo.), since I could'nt get the drums to "swing" properly no matter what patterns or quantization I used. However, I did some decent backings with those sample-cd's and manually playing the bass (via midi-guitar) & piano. If You are looking for VST-plugs for brass & woodwinds, just check out "the Trumpet" and "Mr.Sax", I think the company is called sample-modelling or such... I have them, and they are just amazing... Look here: http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/products_sax.php (check out the guy playing keyboards in the demo-vid, amazing....) There's a lot of good strings out there that will do the work, it seems that its easier to simulate than brass & woodwinds. I'm looking forward to hear Your stuff!!! Btw. I'm filming my assignments right now, but I think I must have some more day's for the "Suspone" -one (if possible), thats a hard one.... //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. I don't have any Jazz drum samples but I would like to look into that more. I have some original composition that I would like to record in Nuendo with full arrangement. Essentially I would like to print lead sheets for that and get it played with live musicians but for purposes of getting gigs for original music and performance I need to get this down (4-5 pieces at least). Checked out the video, you are right, that guy can really play My bass player friend gets me all those VST's, I will see if he can get that one Let me know if you come across some other ones! Regarding "Suspone" try to do it soon as I have to submit report and close the April thread. I won't rush you, if it takes a week no problem, I am expecting good work from you always so no rush take your time and do it right! Pedja |

Pedja I shall check here Pedja, I have a lot of sample CD's with some really cool grooves on. (they are in loops, so they can just be dragged & dropped into Cubase/Nuendo and they will adjust to the tempo automatically) I can give You some pointers later, I dont just remember their name atm. I was chasing grooves with brushes like an idiot a year ago, since no drum sampler can't do this realistic, and I came across a lot of good sampling CD's. Anyway, here is the 2-5-1 lesson. //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. Oki, so I finally got the jazz-standard uploaded, as I said before I have choosen Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays", much because that it enables me to practice the b5-substitution, but also because I've listened to a tune by Scofield that is named "Last Week" years ago that is actually the same song but in 3/4 + 4/4 (eg. 7/4). The solo here is kind of "written" based on some takes I did earlier, and I did so cause of practice some timing and phrasing. I will eventually upload a totally "free" improvisation later on. The theme is merely reflected than played as written, and I arranged like some sort of chord-solo with minimal use of notes to emphasize the melody.

Sounds good Staffay! I would love to hear more about Drum sample CD's you got and also your VST usage. Shoot me a private message about it or send me an email. Still waiting for Brecker's solo so that we can get moving on new material in May! I've sent a mail! And I hear ya!!! I am quite busy this week with work, but I will try to complete it in a couple of days!!! //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. Hi Pedja
Finally, I transcribed this piece. But to play it in original tempo..... its impossible for my fingers..... Maybe I can reach 70-80% in a couple of days or a week. Right now Im playing at 50% as You can see below. (yeah, I know that the first fast phrase is a little bit sloppy). I have a question though, the second fast phrase seems to be a little out of time or is it another time than 16'th notes? I cant really figure it out, but strangely I can sort of play it, but only at half-speed.... Whats interesting when slowing down a piece like this, is that even the great Michael Brecker does small mistakes here & there in timing and some notes are not properly articulated. However, that is not heard in original tempo. But it kinda make me feel a little better about my own playing.... I will suggest that we moves on and meanwhile I while continue working on this piece, maybe we can have it as an exam??? Since time is really running, it would be fun to do some more before its too late..... All the best! //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans.
