Hmm what works for me is playing the note and then quickly lift your fretting finger. that it just slightly hits the string above the fret (the metal bar)

or just touch keep ur finger above the string and fret and play the note

Let your finger slighty touch the string (don't fret the string, just get your finger in contact with the string) and do that almost exactly over the metal fret. Pick the string a couple of times and try diffrent finger positions over the fret until you can hear the harmonic...

Notice that you can get harmonics over any fret but it is much easier on the 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th fret (also 3rd but a little harder than the others)

Also you can get some harmonics on the pickups position. But, as the guy said, you have to touch slightly the string and then pick. It works better when you're exactly over the fret

You can also produce the natural harmonics above the 12th fret, like at the 14th, 15th, 19th etc. You might want to try them on your G string first, as it is the string that natural harmonics are produced the easiest. Some frets require a specific amount of gain, as Ivan said, but there are harmonics that are easily produced without any gain or distrortion ( like the 12th, 7th and 5th for example).
