Taking a hint from the Film Scores thread, I decided to bring up an under looked area of music, Video Game Scores. I'm sure some here know that they have some of the most beautiful pieces of work, and most original. So if you have any favorites, what are they? Composers and games alike.

My favorites would have to be:

Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy Series/ Lost Odyssey)
Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill Series)
Harry Gregson-Williams (Metal Gear Solid Series)
Jeremy and Julian Soule (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion)
Jack Wall (Mass Effect Series)
Normand Corbeil (Heavy Rain)

Surely the soundtrack from Total Annihilation has to go in here. It was epic.

Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill Series)

Definitely. The Daddy of VG soundtrack composers. The soundtracks for the Silent Hill series are so creative and atmospheric.

I also liked how Danny Elfman stamped his trademark sound for the Fable theme and how Russell Shaw upheld the sound throughout the rest of the game

Also, two of the most memorable games that I played had really good soundtracks; Mafia (Vladimir Šimůnek) which also featured Django Reinhardt tunes in-game and a cracking tune by Latcho Drom called La Verdine

..the other game series is The Longest Journey and its sequel, Dreamfall, which had a superb score written by Leon Willett

and of course I have to mention Duke Nukem

I also like the Megatron version..

But one of the best music scores is the old Doom 1 and 2 stuff smile.gif I always keep the midi files somewhere, they just rock wink.gif

God of War have some cool bands on it's soundtrack (included Dream Theater). But I think that the best score I ever listened on a game was the music in Final Fantasy 8. It's just perfect

There are so many great video game scores, I'm a big fan of the genre. Themes from old school games are the best!

Here are some Castlevania themes:

For details, composers etc.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_in_the_Castlevania_series

And some more old friends:

Also check out this danish band (Press Play on Tape) playing covers of VG themes:

They're really good. The coolest stuff they do is playing music on old game controllers (skip to around 3 mins for the song):

Now, I remember a Sega Genesis game called "Rock 'n Roll Racing" that had Sabbath, Purple and more classic rock bands in the music of the game, played in Midi. That was hilarious!!

One of the best soundtracks I've heard is from Donkey Kong Country (all 3 first parts) on Super Nintendo, check out this theme smile.gif On top of it all, developers had 8-bit chip, 16-bit DSP, and 64 kB of SRAM for making it work! smile.gif

I remember rock n roll racing on the megadrive, was an isometric racing game IIRC? The music was done so bad that it wrapped around to being good smile.gif
