#1 is Iron Maiden. (Steve, Bruce, Dave, Adrian, Janick, Nicko, everybody)

After that though, It would be Hansi Kursch, Marcus Siepen, and Andre Olbrich (Blind Guardian)
Arjen "Ayreon" Lucassen (Ayreon)
Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)
Steve Vai
John Petrucci, John Myung, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Ruddess, and James Labrie (Dream Theater)
Paul Wagonner (Between The Buried and Me)
Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth)
Warrel Dane, Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)

Plenty more but those are the main ones

Oh, this was a hard one... My grandfather always said: "Music consists of three elements - melody, rhytm and harmony". In some way, I have always adopted this, and a good song is not a good song if it can't be played sitting next to a campfire and played on an acoustic. Ofc. there are some exceptions from this rule, but in general terms I believe so.
So my answer would be like a kilometer long, but speaking of modern music my favourite composers are Lennon & McCartney, Deep Purple, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sting, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, George & Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington and a lot of others I probably forgot....

Hmm misunderstood the subject at first I think!

My favourite songwriter (if we're not talking lyrics) I can't pick out. The few I like the most are: David Gilmour, Adam Jones (Tool), Matthew Bellamy, Mark Knopfler and Tom Morello.
