Hey Ruzz,

We are starting with our June MTP work! For your 1st assignment you will be required to focus on improvisation. I have prepared reading material for you along with practical application for it. For more info about your assignment, read below.

1st assignment :
Superimposing with minor pentatonics + improvising

- Read Superimposing with Minor Pentatonics post HERE
- After reading the whole thing with related link posts, think about choosing one chord and one approach you will use for recording!
- After you have chosen your approach, record a backing track with that chord and on top of that record yourself soloing with 1 or all 3 minor pentatonics corresponding with that mode!
- Post your work in this thread.

Let me give you an example here. Lets say that you have chosen A minor as your chord. Now you also chose A minor to be treated as II (Dorian sounding). In that case you should play minor pentatonics from G major scale ( A , B and E minor pentatonics) over A min chord in the background. 4th assignment asks you only to pick 1 but it also allows you to use all 3 pentatonics if you want to.
Backing track doesn't have to be anything fancy for this purpose. Just guitar playing the chord will do, if you want to add bass and drums to that to make it sound tighter go ahead!

Deadline for this assignment is 9th of June!

Good luck with it and feel free to ask me any questions in this thread.

Pedja

Hey Pedja

If I want to add bass I should make sure that the bass is only playing notes from the chord right?
Lets say I pick the Amin7 as backing.
In this case the bass should only be playing notes:
A (root)
C (minor 3rd)
E (5th)
G (minor 7th)

Hey Ruzz!

Thats a great question man. Depending on the tempo and style of bass line (walking, broken feel or half or whole notes) your note choice can vary. In general you can never go wrong with just playing chord tones. Lets simplify it even more, you can never go wrong if you just play roots and nothing else. If you would like to add passing scale notes, it would be ideal to use walking bass line (constant quarter notes for example).

Hope that helps man!

Thank you for your fast answer smile.gif

I think I am just going to stick with the chord tones if I decide to use bass smile.gif

You welcome Ruzz!
Whatever you decide it will be correct since emphasis are on improvising not bass line smile.gif

Hey Pedja

Here is what I came up with.
I did not have any electric bass emulator so I used some old vintage synth modulation instead. I think it sounds allright.
This was really hard for me. As I mentioned over MSN I have some problems with rhythm when improvising..

I played this over an A min7 chord and wanted to make it sound Dorian.
This means I was playing:
A minor pentatonic (II)
B minor pentatonic (III)
E minor pentatonic (VI)

I hope you like it.

Hey Ruzz !

Backing track is awesome. Reminds me of those in guitar magazines for lick studies smile.gif
Phrasing in your solo varies, especially when you play syncopated rhythms. We will work more on that. As far as melodic choice goes, you did good! With more new materials we will cover, your solo will sound more mature I am sure. This is however very good starting point and it shows me clearly what you lack in your playing man. Great stuff smile.gif

Anders here is your 2nd assignment !

2nd assignment:
Superimposing in 2 different keys!

- Record a backing track focusing on two chords that come from different keys and are not related in one key. For example C major and Eb major!
- Pick your solo approach with pentatonics and state it once you submit audio file of your work.
- Tempo of the backing is your choice!
- Anywhere from 30 seconds up of improvising is acceptable for this assignment!

Deadline for this assignment is 19th of June!

Let me know if you got more questions.

Pedja

Hey Pedja

I am sorry I was unable to complete the assignment before the deadline.
Backing consists of Cmaj7 to G#maj7.
I wanted both of them to be sounding lydian, I therefore played the following pentatonics:

Cmaj7:
B minor pentatonic (III)
A minor pentatonic (II)
E minor pentatonic (VI)

G#maj7:
G minor pentatonic (III)
F minor pentatonic (II)
C minor pentatonic (VI)

To have an overview of this while playing was very hard for me, so I did not pay much attention to landing notes.
I am used to just soloing over one key, in fact I think this is the first time I have done otherwise smile.gif

Regarding REC.
As you know in a week it is a year since Michael Jackson died, so I am thinking of playing this lesson by Muris:

Hope you like the assignment
Anders

Ruzz this sounds good to some extent. I like how you tried repetition with rhythm and similar melodic shapes. Some landing notes like you said were off (they were not chord tones nor tensions but rather avoid notes like perfect 4th over maj chord).
We will move onto your remaining 2 assignments for June.

3rd assignment
Tribute to Michael Jackson for REC

- Get backing track from Muris for this lesson here
- Record video of yourself playing and post it for REC and here .

4th assignment
Superimposing over minor chords in different keys

- Pick two minor chords that belong to different keys
- Record a solo using minor pentatonic superimposing technique
- Make sure you improvise and not compose!
- Tempo of your choice
- Create backing in your style and choice.

Deadline for remaining 2 assignments is 30th of June!

Let me know if you got any questions Anders!

Hey Pedja!

I reached the end of the assignments just in time biggrin.gif
I would have liked to practice more on this if I had the time though.

Here is the link to the REC thread:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=35712

For the 4th assignment I chose the chords:
Dmin7
Ebmin7

I wanted both of them to sound Dorian so I used the following pentatonic scales:

Dmin7:
D min pentatonic (II)
E min pentatonic (III)
A min pentatonic (VI)

Ebmin7:
Eb min pentatonic (II)
F min pentatonic (III)
Bb min pentatonic (VI)

I hope you like what I came up with in this period smile.gif

Tomorrow morning I will be leaving for Roskilde Festival.
I will therefore be gone from the internet for the next 9 days due to massive partying! biggrin.gif
I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to this. laugh.gif
I will be back monday the 5th of July for the next round of MTP.

Have a great one mate!

Anders

Thanks for submitting audio now. I just listened to it, you were describing changes good until the last time around over Ebmin chord.
I will close now this thread for GMC management purpose. New one will be opened today for July work!
