If You Need Strength Use a Planet Waves VariGrip or GripMaster ... ( I would choose the Varigrip over the Gripmaster because you can regulate the tension )

I agree with Zak on this. You have two types of muscle tissue - fast and slow.
http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/anatomy...leFiberType.htm strengthening your hands only strengthens your slow muscle. Fast muscle relies on speed exercises. During volleyall training I would do fast-muscle training where no sooner do you land that immediately jump - speed jump training affects how quickly you burst. In the same way, speed training for guitar requires fast muscle exercise - you don't want to press down hard - you want light fingers and low string action. Christian A. -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!

With due respect, I think this is really a misconception of what matters. In a precision movement such as with fingers, the issue here is not muscular strength so much, it is you neural synaptic structure. In a nut shell, people with great musician's hands have neural circuits that are very defined for each individual fingering, rather than overlapping and mushed up. Good practice habits are what establish this, but it takes a long time. Not pumping iron in some fashion. There is no need for strength when doing speedruns! In fact you don't even have time to use any since you are moving your fingers so fast. Speedruns come from coordination and fingerspeed - both aquired through practicing. Strong fingers won't help you much with speed but with vibrato and bendings and maybe with some hammer-ons... Zakk is saying the same thing as me, just in a different way. Yes, practice is all you need really. A couple years back I got one of those gripmaster gadgets, used it a week and it's been gathering dust ever since. Might be good for climbers to build finger strength but didn't help me at all with guitar. Playing every day builds endurance & accuracy, nothing like a guitar.

Hehe. Next stage, "Squeeze coconut with bare hands" next step, warm up for half an hour touching hot plates in the kichen to stregthen up the fingers JK, IMO there is no "strength" involved when playing fast, your hands should be as relaxed as possible, there is no time to tense up muscles. You gain speed with precision. If you are precise, you will be able to play fast, if you aren't precise, you will reach one tempo and that's it. If you want to go further you have to go back on ground zero and start all over again, but this time more precise. And again, the more precise you start and keep it that way, the faster you will become. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE
