I figured you would enjoy it since Danny Elfman is great for orchestration tips and tricks wink.gif
Lets see how far you get with this one!

How do you want your "lead" sheet? Just melody with chord harmony above? Or a full on orchestral score?
I ask since a midi mock-up in Guitar Pro just won't cut the mustard; I'm on the last bit and I last counted around 40 different instruments (~83-100 VST channels!).
.. and I really wish I had the Hein's Horns collection for this. The orchestral sounds don't have the right timbre or any of the articulations I'm after, whereas the other VSTs I have just aren't up to scratch. Is there anyone willing to sponsor me out there? I need freebies wink.gif

I'm writing this placard and I'll hang around studios with
"Will transcribe for quality VSTs.."

Heh - long day.. we had a leaving-do at work, so I'm back late. Anyhow, as promised, here's the assignment:

The simplified lead sheet:

..didn't spend much time on this I'm afraid, but the essential elements are there I think. It's not laziness; it's Danny Elfman. His style, in this, is predominantly lead by a simple melody that is played around with and varied over a main "riff", therefore it's not as simple as "this harmony for this part of the melody" (it's not a choral suite). So I've chosen a limited number of places to suggest a harmony but it is to reflect either what the melody suggests or what the underlying riff creates, or both. Therefore, it may not... nay, probably will not sound correct if it's just harmonised with the melody that's written - that's not what I'm describing here.. However, it should be enough info for a jazzer to reharmonise to their own content - there's bags of room for "play", which is how I think Elfman uses the music: he does a lot with very very little.

So, no full orchestral transcription this time round, however, I could provide if needed. Trust me though, it would be a large file - the number of instruments involved would cover a page and a half just for two measures.

And now for the fun bit - how I used my VST's to transcribe and recreate the theme you forwarded me to.
As mentioned, the horn sections are not to my liking - you try getting an "orchestral/symphonic" VST to sound like a big band. I'm not going to go into some of the workarounds I had to think of, but this thing wasn't straight forward. Nevertheless, here's the completed project.

That was fantastic as with previous assignments smile.gif
I like your approach since this is mostly modal type melody and you didn't put chords on the lead sheet. You can hear in the arrangement that the same type of rhythm motif (and harmony) is going underneath just basically changing the place where it appears (bottom, middle or top voice!) so here we are actually using OSTINATO which is very common technique for film scoring and writing arrangements.
Overall this was excellent. I was happy to hear your big band version towards the end - you know I love big band sound ! smile.gif
What VST's did you use for whole thing? I was just talking to Staffay last night about orchestral VST's. I want to write some 4 or 5 part arrangement for Trumpet, Alto + Tenor Sax and Baritone, perhaps Trombone smile.gif
I will post all your assignments very soon but it will be much easier since you got 10 days to complete them all biggrin.gif

Well, I only have the EWQL Symphonic Orch (gold XP edition.. I haven't upgraded yet) but they really didn't sound good in a jazzy/big band context, so I used Colossus samples, also from EWQL, but the sounds and articulations are very limited.
As I was crying about it earlier - I think that the Chris Hein Horn collection (there are 4 volumes) offer the best sounds on the market at the moment. I really really want to get my hands on it - I've got a few uses lined up.

http://www.chrishein.net/

The Colossus library has now been replaced with Goliath, but they're pretty much the same. It has the different sax samples, trombones, trumpets etc, but as I said - not that much you can do with them - I had to faff lots with expression envelopes and fades - not much fun

Good alternatives are Garritan Jazz and Big Band (JABB)

and there's AMG KickAssBrass

Will let you know if I do. Read lots about the 1st link you shared and listened to a lot of demo samples. That is exactly what I need for Jazz arranging which is why I am really looking into getting it smile.gif

Ok Art here are your remaining assignments.

Assignment 2:
- Write out short article (one page long in word, times new roman font size 12) titled "Introduction to arranging"

Assignment 3:
- Write out short article (one page long in word, times new roman font size 12) titled "Introduction to orchestration"

Assignment 4:
- Pick a lesson you would like to do for REC and record it, upload on Youtube, embed it and make it available for REC.

These should be fun assignments. 2nd and 3rd assignments will focus on your approach, how do you see, treat and consider arranging and orchestration. Make sure that article is not too long as I said cause you have around 5 days to complete all 3 assignments. Good luck!
