So finally I got a studio in my neighbourhood booked for a recording session on tuesday.
As some of You may know, I ran a studio myself in the 80'ths as well as participated as a sideman on some records, not worth naming though........  This will be the very first record in my own name, and I'm very excited bout it. We're gonna record everything with analogue technique to get a more vintage sound, and no rehearsals will take place before the session. I'm aiming at doin some 4-5 songs in one day, since we're gonna record "live", all my own songs. So why is he doin this, may some of You think ??? Of course I have some well motivated answer on this leading-to-nowhere project: 1) I will post a copy to Ms.Pfeiffer, in order to get invited to her home. 2) I want to hear my own music on my funeral. 3) I want others to have a copy of my bad taste in song-writing, by experience I know that my own recordings suddenly disappears after some months, dont really know why ??? 4) I want to throw my finances on something useless, and this will be the ultimate stuff! 5) At last - but not least, I will try to convince some tonedeaf club-owners that we are artists and not dishwashers or cleaners.... Ofc. For runs over 500 cds a replication plant is definitely better but because of the number of cds produced it can't be classified as a demo, As it is no longer a demo most replication plants will expect/demand both an ISRC and a signed legal document that you either hold the copyright to, or have the copyright owner's clearance to use, the songs on your disc. (Most plants bury this requirement in the legal jargon somewhere in their 'technical requirements' details.) If it's the latter (ie the disc includes cover versions and/or samples) then you may need to register with the PRS in order to complete the AP2 Staffay. Oki, I will share the first steps in the recording process with You guys here in this thread, and then I will keep it updated!
First, here is the place where we are recording: Berno Studios The guy is very experienced and has done a lot of metal, rock, jazz etc. with the top-artists here in my area. Day One 09.00 - 16.00 First we where thinking of going completely analog, but after some discussions we decided to do it digital anyway. Since he has very good A/D -converters, and a very accurate Otari 24-bity recording unit in combination with Pro-tools HD2, the benefits of this system editing-wise and mixing wise is far beyond the analog stuff. So after micing the drums, the bass (no lining here!) and the guitar, we took place in the same room. However, the guitar was separated in the room to avoid leakage in the other mics to have the possibilty to overdub if necessary. Only Neumanns, Sennheiser & quality condenser mics as well as SM 57's where used. Everything was checked for phase-problems, and after some 3-4 hours we were ready to go. Since we was totally un-rehearsed due to holidays, lack of time etc. we spent some time rehearsing on every song before doin the takes. Originally I planned to do 4 songs, maybe 5 if there was time, but the other guy's had to leave at 16.00, so there was only three one's recorded. The fourth one - was that complicated, and we we're getting tired, so we decided to do it later. Notable is that actually playin in the same room without any ear-phones, is a big advantage by my means, since the communication between us musicians becomes much more fluid, and the fact that You can hear how ther instruments sound by themselves. Day 2 09.00-13.00 This day we were supposed to play all guitars on those three songs that we recorded the other day. (Demons in Tango, Sheesh & My Love is gone, I think they still can be found here somewhere in their demo versions....) But since we started to talk bout music, me and the owner of the studio, we were'nt that effective..... Anyway, we started with running my 70'ths marshall in a Leslie-cabinet instead of a regular speaker, an idea I got for some day ago. It seems to work very well, and I really like the sound so far. After that we switched to some Marshall like sound played with my LP through my Tweed Deluxe and did all distorted backing guitars on two songs as well as a lot of fills - that probably wont be used very much, but its better to have too much material than too little.... After that we connected the real Hammond to the Leslie and I did some backing keyboards for Demons in Tango - since this one is supposed to be some kind of "Radio-Edit" that normal people can understand..... The third song we didn't had the time to do at this occasion, since this one gonna be recorded with guitar & vocals at the same time. On the agenda is to finish these 3 songs off in next week - since I need a rough mix of them at least to send to some Venues in order to get some gigs. However, the whole album will be properly mixed when all the songs is done (about 20, of which we will keep 10-14, I think) The sound samples I posted below is just the sound going into the recording system with no effects, mixing etc. except for some snare reverb.... In my opinion it sounds very clear and distinct in this stage of the production - especially the high transients differs a lot from the "normal" mics & soundcards people usually have. As we all know, the general rule is: what goes in comes out, and what You are really listening to at this stage is the basic sound of the instruments and the playing - the mixing is a totally other issue , and one must imagine what it will sounds like when ready, since it sounds very flat & boring at this point in the process. //Staffay This post has been edited by Staffy: Jul 15 2010, 06:14 PM
