Metal styles dont really need a tone knob I guess, more like a "MOAR!!" knob! But certainly for most other genres its useful to be able to roll off some tone, expecially with something like a strat that can be overly bright through some amps, a little roll off is nice. Also to get the old woman tone its required and just for smoothing out a clean amp too.
