Hi guys,

Has I mentionned in an other topic, my friend just bought a new guitar and it plays like crazy.... I was kind of jealous to see that my strat wasn't playing as well has his new guitar.... So I decided to change the strings and to set it up myself.....

I had no problem to change the strings.... The truss rod looked perfect but I found that my action was a bit high. I have lowered the action... but the I hear some string buzz so I raised it up a bit... It was still buzzing but not that bad....

When I tried my guitar this moring it was awful, my low-e and A string were buzzing so I raised them up... Now the problem is that my action is really high. I loosen the truss rod a bit to increase my curve and get raid of some buzz but it didn't really help and I don't want to twist it too much.

I have been looking around the Internet and followed the normal procedure that everyone explain
  • 1. Change the strings
  • 2. Check the Truss Rod
  • 3. Adjust the saddles
  • 4. Set the intonation

I have followed all these procedure and my strat is still buzzing... it really annoys me that by trying to improve my tone and playability I have made them worst... Now it seems like only my low-e string is buzzing and a bit my A string... I am going to raise them both... but my action is going to be high. Since I have actually an action of 2.5mm on the low-e string at the 12th fret and it still buzzing.

I know I'm an agresive player o I need to have my action a bit higher but it buzzes still with a smooth picking.

Any help would be apprceiate.

P.S we should really have a section of guitar maintenance at GMC....

You need to play for a couple hours to get the strings fully stetched before you start changing things.
Buzz could be a faulty set truss rod or even that the nut is cut too deep.

Be sure to measure the neck relief, just changing randomly could go the opposite way.
After stringing up a guitar I usually tune it, play some until it stays in tone and then I leave it over night. Necessary or not, I like the neck to be given time to adjust properly before I adjust the trussrod.

So my suggestion is that you start by measuring according to the art of checking the neck relief smile.gif (which is described in a couple other threads here)

Funny that you like the action on your friend's Thinline so much. I had one for many years and never liked it, nor the tone, and even less the action. I felt it had too much buzz. Mine was a '69 reissue, so no humbuckers but single coils, as usual in teles.

I sold it. The guy who bought it thought it platyed great. To each their own.

Now I have a Strat and I love it.

Each guitar (and I mean each guitar, not each model) is different. What some love, others dislike. And viceversa.

Having said that, if you are not able to adjust your strat yourself, consider taking it to a tech and have him properly set up for you. You might be surprised!... Or you might discover that you are still uncomfortable, in which case... sell it! Someone out there mightl love it smile.gif

This is a very, very complicated issue and a very personal one. Setting up a guitar is something that takes a pro years to master. Learning it yourself takes time. Each adjustment has an impact on every other adjustment. It's like a rubics cube. That being said, learning how to do it properly is very rewarding. Nobody, and I mean, NOBODY will ever be able to set up your guitar in exactly, precisely the way you want it. You may not even know exactly how you want it until you final master setting it up.

Neck bow, you fret is bowing backwards because the string tension is not equal to the tension the neck is getting...
You have to release the tension on the neck by loosening the truss rod a bit to alow you neck to bow forward again to get it straight.

From my eyes perspecyivr the truss rod seem ok .... I would like to have the tool to caluclate my relief... With a simple rule it is hard to take a small measurement like that.

Yeah, trussrod. In your case you shous losen the screw. If you don't have a feeler gauge you can measure with your eyes. Press down fret 1 and fret 17, eye measure the gap half way inbetween. Then check first two trirds of the neck (around between 1-12) and the two thirds up to fret 17. Not so scientific with exact measures but you'll be able to see the neck relief before your eyes and get a feeling for what is wrong.
Try to see, in your case, that the neck is bent backwards.

Nä, but if you google for washburn + buzz feiten maybe you'll find something. I know Washburn has adopted it on several models. Probably others brands have aswell but Washburn was the one that struck my mind.

From what I know I think it has to be setup by a tech that has been trained by the Buzz Feiten company. Or that could be to install it, can't remember which blink.gif I remember reading something about it at Ed Romans website www.edroman.com look under the tech articles, it should be there somewhere.

Thx. I have it on my Suhr-strat, and when I spoke to a master luthier he gave me some info, btw. he uses it when making guitars himself, stating that the guitar is much better in tune - which I believe is true, since my Strat even sounds in tune when shifting from Barre'-chords to open one's.... However, he was a little spoky bout telling me the details on how to do it, stating that You have to use special tuners etc.

I'm quite sure the Planet Waves tuner has a special Buzz Feiten tuning system in it, you should check that out as well.

I do not posses the tools to measure precisely the neck relief but judging from my eyes and comparing it to another guitar that has been done by a luthier 2 days ago it seems allright.

I have red something on the Internet that I haven't really undestand. It says that you should do a second test by fretting the 8th fret and the last fret and checking the gap above the 12th and 14th fret. It says I am supposed to have no gap... But I have a tiny one when I hit them I hear a thumping fret noise. I have already gave my neck some relief yesterday I am not sure I could give him more today, and I am not sure that it is the real problem.

The best thing would be to go see a luthier and asking him to teach me how to set it up properly. The problem is that the old luthier I use to see don't do guitar anymore, and I don't have his phone number and his adress... It is sads because he use to adjust the guitar right in front of you and talking about a lot of stuff. He his the man who taught me how to change the strings on a Floyd Rose guitar. The other luthier that I know is a real thief ph34r.gif he his going to ask me to leave the guitar for a while and he is going to charge me too much.

I am still carefull with the rod I don't want to end up with a Stratocaster that has a bolt lighning neck. It would be original but I don't thin it suits my style tongue.gif
