I've been checking out some guitars online and i came across a number of guitars from Line6.They are part of the Line6 Variax series.
These guitars seem to be very expensive and judging by the looks of these guitars,I dont understand why they're so costly.
Does anyone know what makes these guitars special?

The reason they are so expensive is because they are not guitars in the truest sense of the word.

Yes they have strings and you play them like a normal guitar but they dont have magnetic pickups, imagine having a guitar that has a PODXT built right into the guitar.

Its a purely digital instrument, you have no need for stomp peddles or anything of that sort, because its all built into the guitar.

Its basically a POD, that you play through.

Well the 1st POD was a revolution. I remember when the only choices were between transistor and tube and NO cab modeling at all (apart from using very awkward EQ settings. Playing guitar at home improved tons because of the POD.
Nowadays Line6 is lagging a bit behind with the amp sims... other companies have surpassed Line6 quality of tone.

Anyway... I have a Variax 700 myself and just recently had Seymour Duncan Pickups added to it. I also left a sound example at my other thread.

The Variax is not a POD XT in a guitar. Instead of simulating Amps and Effects it simulates different guitars by using Piezo instead of magnetic pickups.
Since Piezos do not consider the tone of the guitar body itself so much it leaves enough room for modeling/simulating a guitars body and response. In clean and crunch the Variax sounds very convincing and until today have not heard any acoustic guitar simulation that is more convincing, but once you go into high gain distortion you really hear a difference.

The 700 series is a good guitar in itself and has become a favourite next to my Ibanez Jem 77 BFP and with the added Seymour Duncans SH6 is not lacking Soundwise at all!!!

But if you consider buying a Variax I'd pick one of the new James Tyler Models which already come with magnetic pickups for the best of both worlds. Strangely they're cheaper than the 700 models...

Well said. A previous post was wrong, I am afraid. The Variax models guitars not effect.
Regarding the price, the Korean made are cheaper than the 700. The "real" James Tyler (well, he did not built it either) are american made with a price well above the £2000
