When you say should i learn all the scales do you mean all the types of scales (major, minor, modes ect) or all the fingerings of a particular scale?

If you meant all the types of scales i would say only learn the ones that suit you as. Once you have learnt the ones that suit you experiment with different kinds if scales that you might think don't suit you, i know Arabic scales have a very cool feel to them from our aspiring instructors lessons.

I would say definitely learn Pentatonic, Major & Minor - they are your basic palette. After that you can add additional scales/modes to suit particular songs or sounds on an as-required basis.

My advice would be, when starting out keep it simple. I currently know all the Am and Em Pentatonic boxes, Aminor aeolian and Cmajor boxes. More than enough to keep me playing! biggrin.gif
