I recently discovered an useful exercise on the Jeff Loomis instructional DVD where the main pattern is like this

--------------------5---6-5-7-6-8-7- etc
---5---6-5-7-6-8-7----8-------------
-----8------------------------------

You can invert it and back to lower strings with a similar pattern. It works very well for me.

I like to wash the hands in warm water for a while, and then warm up by playing slow scales, modal approach. Then it's off to exercise! smile.gif

Seems like it takes me forever to warm up to a point where my hands are moving very fluidly and with control.

My routine usually starts with a slow metronome setting. I usually pick one exercise that I've fully memorized plus one or two new licks that I'm working on to bring up to speed. I then play through each at the slow metronome tempo until I start to feel loose. From there, I work both the excercise and new lick up to my fastest comfortable speed in very small increments as little as 2 or 3 bpm. This can take almost an hour which seems like a very long time, but at least by then I've had a pretty good workout and even possibly mastered the new lick.

From day to day, I build the licks I'm working on up to a song. During the 2nd hour of practice, I usually work on the whole piece (song, lesson, etc.) or at least as much as I've memorized to date. Once I get the whole piece down, I record it and then move on to a new lesson or song, starting the cycle all over again.

...a little video I'm preparing especially for GMC - not a guitar lesson, but a little anatomic trick, which will boost your hands in 10 minutes smile.gif (5 minutes for each hand) - it's gonna be scary the first time you try it, but trust me, it's done wonders for me.

I'll film it today and hopefully, I'll have it ready this week!

As an interesting side note.. I have something to add to the idea of keeping relaxed and loose. It may not be popular with some of you, but the fact is: Drinking lots of Coffee is not good for our muscular system. I don't have the exact medical terms but in short, caffeine stimulates our muscles and actually makes them more tense. They will tire much quicker and as we know, the more tense we are, the more prone to injury we are.

(Obviously this includes tea as well, but a cup of coffee has a larger amount of caffeine than 1 tea bag.)

I just have 1 coffee in the morning (I'm not going to totally cut it out - it's too good) and the rest of the day, just drink water or herbal teas. (I know, not very rock n roll... but not being able to play my guitar because I've over worked my self is even less cool)

The other thing to remember is that we need to keep our muscles hydrated so they can work properly. They need oxygen too ! smile.gif

So more water, less coffee ! wink.gif

That's very interesting! I didn't know that caffeine did that to our bodies! blink.gif I love coffee too! But I'm like you, I only drink one cup in the morning. Then I drink orange, milk, and apple juice all day. happy.gif

I used to do these hand stretchings and massages, and later play a few slower licks. Nowadays I warm up my fretting hand by playing some Bach pieces, it get's me through biggrin.gif

Some nice advices here!

I think it's also good to warmi up by playing some chords / chords progression, starting with simple one or playing chords inversions and increase the difficulties (like streches between the fingers...).
It's also a great way to improve your chord knowledge

I don't really warm up. I do stretches sometimes. When I feel that it's too cold here and I can't play normally, I just put my hands into warm water, it really helps. smile.gif

Me neither smile.gif I just take my guitar and play. But lately i realized i have to do some streching cause my hand started to hurt badly

My warmup is pretty regimented. Here's what works for me.

1.)A few minutes of wrist rolls, some hand/finger stretches, and range of motion work.

2.)Start slow and work up some speed with some simple drills like this.

3.)Push to max speed and start working on the days material/practice/writing/etc

4.)Cool down by playing some chords

5.)Ice down my forearms with an ice cube

6.)Cool down stretches and wrist rolls.

I gave myself carpal tunnel several years back so I'm very careful to warmup and cool down.
