I clench my teeth sometimes when I play. I know this because my jaws start to hurt after a while. I don't usually get really expressive with my face while playing - I guess it's not as natural to me. I suppose everybody is different - some smile, some go "tunnel mouth", and some go crazy with expressions. Some play sitting down very still, some sit and move a bit; some play standing up and stay relatively still, and finally, some stand and move all over the place. YOU GET THE IDEA! laugh.gif

I sit down and stand up. I sometimes rock it while standing. cool.gif You guys know how I express myself from my RECs. wink.gif

So my question is, how do you express yourself while playing?

I think I'm probably pretty still and non expressive most of the time. Actually that's something I've become aware of and really think needs work cause if you look like you're having fun, you probably are, and vice versa. Or more generally, your expressions are probably linked to whats going on in your head at the time.

I think a model for expression is EVH. For me anyway, cause every video I watch of his it looks like he's laughing inside and having a blast. I've always thought that his music conveys a sense of happiness, fun, and just goofing around. That's where I want to get. At the same time, whatever the expression, I think it should be sincere and if you learn to express something with your face, your music will follow. .. or is it the other way around? cool.gif

I don't know, my face is usually serious because I'm really concentrating. Maybe with time I'll become more expressive. wink.gif

Haha, this is a really funny topic ! laugh.gif

'Tunnel Mouth !' That's one of the best expressions I've heard... I guess you mean mouth open, like Dave Murray from Iron Maiden ???

I actually clench my teeth too when practising and actually bang them together when counting, something I didn't realise until it was pointed out to me ! mellow.gif

I'm pretty non expressive face wise, thankfully... when playing with the band I like to go for it though.. you can't have this much hair and not use it after all ! wink.gif

One of the most relaxed players has to be Paul Gilbert though.. although he really gets into it these days, I remember old vids of him doing his solo spot in Mr Big and he's looking as if he's just looking for a friend in the audience whilst he's shredding away !

What does he do?

A funny video I found of guitarist on stage. I know he isn't as expressive as some, but it's still kinda funny. Looks like a puppet.

It's been a while since I record myself, but the times I did I looked to serious, which I'm not laugh.gif

PD.- Be careful if you clench your teeth, chances are you do it also when not playing guitar, and you can damage your teeth over time.

Just recorded a video of me playing some blues on a backing track. I'm not gonna share the video, cause I kinda fucked up and didn't get it recorded properly, but I couldn't stop laughing when I saw this and had to share it, so thought about making a new topic, but found this one, where it would fit perfectly:

Click on it to see it a bit larger.
