I mean, 1,000 times I read someone's review on the quality of a particular album.
And some of my early attempts ended unsuccessfully, as the critics thought it was rubbish! perhaps ....
But, what I always wanted to know is:
Do you know any music critic who would record a brilliant song, and show us "amateurs" - how it should look like ?!?!

There is this german Band called Tomte, their Singer and main Songwriter works as a music journalist. To be honest, I don't like their style of music, it's this typical german indie-rock from Hamburg...these bands have lyrics that are so cryptic, you just don't know what they wanna tell you.

Couldn't agree more - it always made me angry when some big name journalist (and no name musician) tries to analyse a record from an "objective" perspective.

First - there is no way to be objective as music is subjective by nature. Even the best biggest songs in the world have flaws - who cares?

Second - if he is to comment on technical aspects ( guitar performance etc) then the journalist should leave that to a professional musician.

So to sum up - thumbs down to music journalists!

The very short answer is NO... I honestly cannot think of one who could even begin to compose a tune ! biggrin.gif

They have to remember, they need us musicians too otherwise they wouldn't have a miserable job ! wink.gif

So true Ben! biggrin.gif it's the same things with criticism in general. For instance look at the huge armies of people who bash other people's videos on youtube. It's quite easy to throw bad words from behind your monitor and keyboards, but let's see you come up with something better than what you just criticized smile.gif

Neil Tennant from The Petshop Boys was a music critic before starting the band. Westend Girls was a huge hit and the band were very successful.

Mark Perry founded the punk fanzine 'Sniffing Glue', was a music critic and formed the seminal UK punk band Alternative TV. ATV didn't have any hits but were very influential in the punk and new wave scene. He's still recording.

Lack of interest and knowledge about the genre a journalist is covering will certainly lead to less understanding of the music. The best way for a critic to not unmask how ill informed he really is could be to talk a record or an event down completely. Right? If he'd praise a concert that according to the real fans was mediocre he'd make a fool of himself and all confidence in him would be lost. But you're always able to give bad critisism, trash talk a band and stand by your words.
I've read excellent columns on records and shows in the swedish guitar magazines and I've read lousy ones in the press. While the guitar magazines not neccesarily have music critics that could write the best song in the world at least they are interested in guitar music and get a chance to write on music they are interested in. The press should cover everything from Britney Spears, Lady Gaga to Anthrax and have knowledge in all.
I can see how it's easier to trash talk when you just don't have a clue.

If I were to write a column on Placido Domingo I'd be clueless. If I wrote "I have no idea...." I'd never get to write a column again. If I said "He seem old and tired, couldn't hold his bladder while hitting the high notes - which ne never was good at ayway - and I could spot that he put his old man diaper on backwards since there were runny smelly leakage. Sad!" ppl would read it and hate me.
I'd be a star on the raise and I could stick to being subjective smile.gif I could meet angry readers with more subjective critisism.

Yes, critisism should be from someone who knowxs the subject and have an interestet in it. For fair critisism by someone who likes the genre in specific for readers who likes the genre. But I don't think a music critic should be able to come up with a better song himself, that's not fair. But he or she should have vast knowledge and stay objective. Most of the self proclaimed critics on youtube got it wrong, writing "you suck" is not objective. Replying "I don't see your shredding videos" is not even neccessary.

The best critisim my band ever got on youtube was "They look like the Bare Naked Ladies with fake russian accent" laugh.gif

If not, for myself, I usually pay less attention to it.

An ex-boss of mine once said to me: "Christian, it's way easier to stand on the sideline and comment on what's going on, than standing in the ring. But believe me, even if you take a few blows, the feeling of being in the ring is so much better than just watching, saying you could do better than that and then silently hating yourself for not having the guts to even try."
He said it to me when we were working on a Presentation for a huge crowd, and I knew there would be some co-workers who would criticize whatever he would say or whatever funny little bits I would put into the presentation to keep the audience's attention. But I think this quote fits in many situation in life.

Christian

But,I will reveal an interesting fact, at least in my country- every beginner or a star, anyway, must have his personal journalist/critic,
only the price varies... wink.gif

I have done some journalistic work until now, but in my leisure time smile.gif I also opted for a balanced article, so that it's really clear, that this is only my personal view on something, but you show also what work was behind something (behind an album in this case). (And well yeah, I could write a song, but to be honest, not a hit song cool.gif smile.gif )
I think, a lot of journalists have the problem that they're working as a freelancer and have to push themselves. And sadly there is nothing than people like more than reading when someone's critized. In Luxembourg has recently started a project of a journalist and a music addict, who want to promote Luxembourgish artists through articles and photos, that's something I really appreciate!

It's true that, from the musician side, I'm probably biased towards critics and it's very well for me to say bad things about them but then I'm being just a bad aren't I ? wink.gif

As Christian said, and it's some of the truest words ever spoken, it's easier to be an armchair critic and an entirely different matter to be on the field, facing the blitz. How can one criticise a desicion made by somebody that was made in circumstances that an outside person didn't experience and couldn't understand ?

It's just like us slagging off albums like St Anger.. it's easy for us to say how bad it may be etc but I'm sure if you were the band in the studio, in those circumstances, it seemed like THE thing to do.. and we can't argue with that, we weren't there and we're not them. smile.gif

Anyway, I digress.. I believe that instead of just criticising something negatively.. if fans are seriously dissapointed by a band, then perhaps take that dissapointment and use it to come up with something of your own. Use it as an inspiration and show us what they can come up with instead ?
