Hmmm. I think I have too many guitars . Well, I heard Richie Sambora once say "A man can never have too many guitars. ... and pairs of sunglasses." I guess it's true. I stopped getting rid of guitars after making two very big mistakes. First I traded my Cherry Sunburst Gibson Les Paul (that I bought with a bank loan when I was 17) for a digital reverb unit about 5 years after I got it. The guitar is probably worth bookoo bucks now, and the reverb unit, which I still have, is worth about $20. Then I once bought a pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster at a garage sale for $400 (the original owner was an older gentleman who had never actually played it so it was in mint condition). I then sold it the next day to a friend who ran a music store for $700. The sad part about that one is that I didn't really need the money at that time as I had just started my first job as an electrical engineer and was doing ok. Oh well, live and learn I guess, but that's when I decided to start keeping all my guitars. So the ones above are part of my 20+ year collection (I bought the Ibanez 540 in 1987 shortly after Surfin with the Alien was released). IMHO, if you have the storage space, and don't need the money, keep all of your guitars forever. Not that I play them all every day or every month anymore. I tend to have one goto favorite all the time. It's just that I've built up quite a few memories with these damn things. Then again, on the other side of the coin, you never really need more than one good guitar. At least keep that one forever even if you have to quit playing for awhile. Currently I have the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck, but I think I like the 60 in the neck more, so thats probably gonna change. I'm looking to get my hands on an EMG HA sometime soon. The HA is the SA single coil in a humbucker housing. The Highway one Strat has the hot Alnico III pickups in it, which I have mixed feelings about. They're more than adequate when playing with any amount of gain. Not the best, but good and acceptable. But for clean sounds, there is a bit of that Strat sparkling clean missing. I usually compensate for this by plugging it into a Bad Monkey and turning up the treble and volume on the pedal. I'm thinking of putting a humbucker in the bridge, either a DiMarzio Chopper or a Seymour Duncan JB I have in another guitar. I also have a guitar that I got from one of my friends for $30. He had a habit he needed to satiate and I needed a guitar Its a 1981(?) Yamaha Studio Lord. I dated it by looking at the date on the back of the pickups. Yes, a genius move on my part Its a Les Paul Lawsuit guitar, and looks almost exactly like it. The major difference between it and the LP is the fact that the Studio Lord is a bolt-on neck. There is also a volute on the neck, which is a reliability advantage it has over the Gibson it is imitating. Its got a monstrous tone, and excellent sustain. It has a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and an eBay Dragon Mountain pickup in the neck, which surprisingly sounds pretty good. But I don't like the frets on it, there too low and wide for my tastes. It also needs a new nut and a trussrod adjustment. So its sitting in the back of my closet for now. For an acoustic I have a 91' Ovation legend given to me by my grandfather. Its a great guitar with excellent workmanship and a very loud, ringing sound. But I did notice it is somewhat fussy about what kind of strings I put on it. I have to put very bright strings on it in order for the bass strings not to sound dull. A little detail about this guitar that I think is really cool is the fact that the tuning machines say "W.Germany" on them. It really dates it to another time in human history. I also have a 4 string banjo. I never play it because it stays in tune about as well as a pimple popping teenager can speak in an even voice. Instead of having machine tuners, it has friction pegs, which are the biggest piece of shit design ever. How well it stays in tune depends on how well the rubber gasket holds the peg. In the back of my closet I have a Peavey Milestone II bass guitar that has a warped neck. It plays fine down in the lower frets so I' not too concerned about it. It was given to me by a friend. Then of course, there is the gem in my collection. It was gift also given to me by my grandfather. Its a Jose Ramirez classical, made in Spain. The sound that comes out of that guitar is absolutely stunning, every note is rich and textured. It also smells fantastic. I open it the case every now and then just to get a whiff of it.
