Playing The Collab...

Hey Guys

So, now that the High Risk collab is finished, let's talk a little bit about our ideas behind recording the solos.

The overall key of the song was in B Minor, so that gave me a basis which I stuck with. The only time I broke outside of the B Minor scale was when I played a flattened 5th (also known as diminished 5th, augemented 3rd, tritone) at 4:22 just before Marek's solo. I thought it was a real 'Marty Friedman' moment tongue.gif

At 4:12 I outlined an A Major arpeggio which corresponded with the A5 chord underneath. All the notes were still within the B Minor scale but it's the way the notes are put together that suggests a particular chord tonality.

There are places where I pop up in the corner and harmonize with Zen, K1R and Gitarrero. At 0:35 I harmonize with Zen by playing an octave above. I do the same with K1R at 2:24. From 4:01 - 4:04 I use octaves again to harmonize with Gitarrero before switching to 3rds for 4:05-4:09.

I mainly just went with my instinct for this collab. I didn't plan anything out. I just made small adjustments in certain places to land on strong notes and I tried hard to stay melodic. So, that's my story... what was your approach/strategy to soloing over this backing track ?

I kinda just went with it, the backing track offered a great vibe for improv so I just played over it for like two hours, messing around. I think the take I did was like the 3rd or 4th take (recording) and I just kept it.

The only thing I went back and added was the harmony.

Cool.. yeah I've heard that a lot of people found it good for jamming over. Did you think much about scales or did you just go with your ear ? smile.gif

Good mix Ben. Enjoyed watching this.

Approach was simple. I played what felt right to my ears. Tried to connect with the listener by establishing a main theme. And also tried not to clutter the take with every technique I know.

3 Very good and very important points right there ! smile.gif If we approached every solo we ever play with just these 3 points in mind we will have a greater chance of excellent results smile.gif

I sorta went Verse/Chorus/Verse on it. It's two structured solos separated by a harmony/melody chorus type bit in the middle. I used several open string licks which we worked on in VIDEO CHAT LESSON 64 which will be in the Wiki soon. The link to all the vid chat lessons in the Wiki is

http://bit.ly/twtgmc

Special thanks to fran for taking my crazy long lesson thread and making it legible smile.gif

I used Guitar Rig for all the sounds and last solo was a patch that sounded a bit like a guitar synth but that didn't end up in the final collab vid. Here is a link to the full solo on youtube for reference.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVr4qAn5xv0...nel_video_title

The rest was just shredding in B Minor. I just felt my way through it really which sounds odd as "Feeling your way through it" is often associated with much slower/melodic playing. But when I'm playing "at speed" I'm not really thinking anymore, it's just happening. Going back and figuring out what I was playing to break it down in to a lesson is usually quite a bit work.

Congrats to Ben for a Killer collab and Horns High to everyone who particpated! Well done guys!

Todd

Not to diminish everyone elses contributions, but I still can't get over how MONSTROUS Todd's solo was, it would've been nice if you left all of it intact biggrin.gif

I just improvised over the backing for few hours smile.gif After an hour of playing I determined to land on the A note, because I could not come up with any idea when I was landing on the B. The backing was quite challenging and I'm not really satisfied with my take, but you made it sound cool in the mix biggrin.gif

Everything has been said xD I looked at the scales I could use and started improvising. After jamming around for an hour or so I tried the open string licks, and the natural harmonics was a spontaneous idea when I recorded it.

I just played what happened to pop in my brain at the time biggrin.gif

Most of it involved straight forward pentatonic with some 16th triplet runs as well as a couple "odd" notes from phrygian dominant!

I basically just went crazy and did whatever. That was like my 30th take or something. I need to stop doing that and go with one of the first takes. biggrin.gif

Yes, to be honest it could have been so easy to just stick Todd's whole solo in there !! cool.gif But I had to be conscious of keeping the overall length down (after all, the backing is the same thing on loop for over 4 mins tongue.gif ) plus it's always good to leave people wanting more ! wink.gif

I think you did a great job, if you can handle this backing you can handle any backing ! smile.gif

Yes, the open harmonics worked really good with the preceding lick. It's funny how it gets to a certain part of the video and there's loads of various open strings licks from you, Marek & Todd ! biggrin.gif

Are you saying we are copying each other? How could we have known what everybody else would play? We live in 3 different countries! How could we have talked about what to play? Through some sort of video chat? Possibly saturday evening?
Come on...that's just science fiction.

That's very kind of you Mudbone smile.gif It's honestly one of my fav solo's that I've ever written. I"m sure Ben cut it up make it fit with the overall vibe of the song so well done there! It really is a killer Collab! For any of those who may have missed my post of my full take (It's well over a minute long just by itself) Here it is again. Enjoy!

P.S. We are going to do some more of these licks this weekend by request!

Thanx guys! And also, congratz to everyone and Ben for pulling this grand collab together!

For my take, I like Tyler's approach - I just heard the melodies instantly and tried to put a lot of nerve in them.

I usually interpret what I hear in my head in respect to the state of mind given by the backing track so that's what came out smile.gif

First of all, congratulations to Ben and to all of you people who contributed! The final result is incredible, and we can see some amazing composition and playing in this video. I've been on the road for a few days, and first tried to look at the video in my phone while waiting to drive on board a ferry in Puttgarden. laugh.gif The connection was kind of bad, though, and I could not load the entire video. Now I'm back home and able to watch the full-size version of all the awesomeness! For my own part(s), I first jammed up a melody for the "slow" section, then I figured I should try to come up with a cool legato lick as a bridge from the first section, so I used some three note per string pentatonic stuff from Ben's video chats. cool.gif Then, mainly for completeness, I composed something for the beginning as well. This has been a lot of fun - my first, but certainly not my last, participation in a GMC Collaboration.
