Hey guys! Let me know if you agree but from my experience one of the best ways to understand a guitarists style is learning from their influences... when I was studying John Petrucci Style, I understood it better after hearing and learning some stuff from Steve Morse, Rush and David Gilmour (as well as some Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Gilbert). The same happened when I was studying Yngwie Malmsteen style.. I learn some Nicolo Paganini stuff, as well as some Richie Blackmore solos. I think that if you want to incorporate some Kiko Loureiro style in your playing you must check some Gilbert, Petrucci, Satriani, Malmsteen, Kotzen and brazilian music.
I think that this formula could be also applied to bands.. what do you think? -------------------- My lessons

Yes, I think this is a vary valid point, Gabriel.. in learning some of Marty Friedman's licks I was able to identify these trademarks in earlier players like Michael Schenker & Uli Jon Roth. By discovering and appreciating other players you open up more possibilities of learning. I think it's also like a personal journey when you go back and trace the evolution of a subject, whether it is music, art, film etc.. each person gets something different out of it and when you have all the 'evidence' you can form your own picture based on what you've learnt Exactly! I know that I'm a bit obsessive sometimes but as you said it's a personal journey and I really enjoy the process. -------------------- My lessons

I admire and respect peoples talent and gifts (natural and learnt), I love and learn from guitarist like Slash, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, the instructor's and member's here at GMC, etc. I've been focusing on Paul Gilbert's picking technique lately.
However, I don't actually consider anyone an Idol. I think it's best to learn from but become your own style of player and music, rather than a clone. I've still got a long way before I can do that, but it's my next step. This post has been edited by Azzaboi: Jul 26 2011, 08:55 AM -------------------- Play Games Arcade Take a break, Play Games! Yeah guys, I agree with you about uniqueness! However I think when we are beginners we need to incoporate other guitarist's licks or style of playing to allow us with time develope ours. And one thing that happens to me is that having an idol doesn't mean that I will copy him or compose similar music, unless I'm composing an "in the style of lesson..."
