Reaper, despite what many people say and think, is NOT free: it is free to evaluate and whilst evaluation is nominally set for 30 days it maybe evaluated for longer. The nag screen is there to remind you that you are still saying that you are evaluating it; if you are not you should either remove it from your computer or purchase a license.
During evaluation all Reaper functions are usuable as per the paid for, licensed version. This is very generous of Jason, the developer, as most DAW evaluations are restricted in some way - either some of the feature set is disabled or the software is set so that it is disabled after the evaluation period. Jason is trusting to your better nature and honesty by allowing you to have full access to all the program up to and beyond the recomended evaluation period. Subsequently purchasing a license means that you have a legal version and your purchase helps to contribute financially to the continued development of Reaper. Unless it's changed with v4 the licenses used to work thus: Apart from the license there is no difference betwen a home version and a pro version of Reaper. There are two types of licnese: 1/ an individual, non-professional user license, and; 2/ a professional license. The difference between the two is that the latter is someone who makes 20,000USD or more per annum working in the music industry in such a way that you would use Reaper commercially. Very few home or project studios will need a pro license. An individual non-pro license used to cost about 50USD; a pro license was 200USD. A license usually means that you are licensed to use the software for 1 or 2 major upgrade cycles . So a license for v4 would be valid for all bug fixes/improvements etc upto either v5 or v6. Up to now, and unlike some daws, a version change only happens with a significant change: some daws are notorious for changing a version with a relatively minor upgrade (or worse bug fix) and charging for it. Take a look at the developer notes on the various iterations of v3 and you can see how many and how often Reaper was improved without charge. Even at 200USD Reaper compares very favourably with the commercial recording/mixing DAWs such as Cubase/Sonar/PT/Logic etc. A major plus of Reaper is that Jason and the Reaper development team actually seem to listen to the Reaper users and implement bug fixes, updates and improvments that users ask for. Is Reaper perfect? No, there are features that it doesn't have which I like and need. That however is true of any DAW. What is important with any DAW is that it fulfills most/all of your requirements and that you can learn and live with the workflow. That's of course what a trial version is all about and also why Reaper is not crippled in any way even without a license. DAWs are complicated and can take time to learn if you do not use them daily. Yes, Reaper is for evaluating, and all the functions are there after the period ends.
