Here in Argentina you have to pay from 100 to 250 usd to play 50 minutes with a low quality equipment (in most of the cases), i am referring to play wth a band in a small pub or bar.
I always thought that it was not fair, i mean, i bring you people to your bar that will consume your products and know your place , and i also have to pay to play!! i may agree to pay for renting a decent sound, but they abuse of the situation mad.gif

so,how is the deal in your country?

This is true.. and the most curious thing is that this is illegal...

In here, you don't have to pay, but either way, you are the one losing time and money in general - transport the band and the equipment, hotel, food and other expenses. At this point, I have gotten past these issues with my projects, as there are always people taking care for the minimum required conditions to be met, but in the same time, not all the gigs are payed. I guess that this is the next step smile.gif in here, if you don;t have a big name, you get payed out of the money people pay to come and see you and in the past, I've been implicated in one too many shows where the club hasn't promoted the show accordingly and thus, too few people came. The bad thing is that both club and band lose from a thing like this, so what to do, one could ask...

If you believe it, clubs usually rely on bands or band management to bring people in at the show. If the band has a lot of fans, this is an easy task, they just have to perform smile.gif if not, you have to bust your hiney on promoting the gig as best as possible!

At this point, Voodoo and the 'Mozart Rocks!' show, have good management and we're going at all sorts of festivals and shows where all the conditions are met, but this is one happy case. I'm curious and a bit scared of what will await Aria, when we are ready to perform smile.gif

I've been in a few 'pay to play' situations before and now I refuse to do anything like it.

What happens is clubs make you 'hire' the room and put on the gig. I can understand they have costs to keep the club open etc but it's best to avoid these situations.

I do get annoyed at the amount of gaurantees clubs want about the amount of people you can bring in. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. in the words of Clint Eastwood - 'If you want a gaurantee, buy a toaster'

You get fans by playing to people.. if nobody will let you play, how are you supposed to get fans ? You can't expect everyone you know to travel to every gig you do, especially when they're in a different part of the country. The best thing to do is try to get on the bill with a better known band or just play at pubs, or bars that don't have a door charge and work from there.

Suspicious clubs, tell me about it. That is true in general. Clubs are just like that. It's different with festivals and other gigs, although sometimes there are unpleasant situations there too.

There are some details tho.. What type of gig are you playing? Rarely will the owner be satisfied with the band, it's only if the band brings him big crowds that drink a lot all the time. Even then, they will never give raise, you always need to ask for it, and hope that you get it. If the band is playing covers, owner will appreciate it more, because more people know these songs, and if the cover band is good, owner may give him regular dates. Even then, after a while, bands must rotate so the club program remains interesting. This "rotation" is in my experience most of the time handled by owner or owner manager in a very childish manner.

If you come to the owner and say that you play author material with couple of covers, and you played couple of gigs here and there, the owner won't pay you a dime, you can be sure that maximum that he will offer you is ticket sales (if you have a man that will sell them) or drink percentage. On top of that, of course you have to pay the expenses for a gig - tone tech, equipment amortization (and usually the equipment is already being heavily "amortized" smile.gif ), and be glad if you get couple of drinks.

Well, if you want to play and make money, you have to be a registered musician. Owners know that young bands are usually not registered, so they are operating in gray zone. This means they can do whatever they feel like. It's cheaper that way for everyone, and owner always looks for the cheapest and the best band, and they come, just because there are no clubs around..

On the other hand, yes you need to pay rehearsal costs, whatever those may be, strings, picks, car, travel expenses, whatever it takes to get there, cables wore down.. it's part of the job.

We usually got paid when we played in Clubs, we always asked for 300 euros and always got it. hen again, we are a coverband and the owner could be quite sure that the place was gonna be packed and people would drink.

yeah i did some pay to play before, but not anymore..
it's sad yeah.

Musicians should make a big group and start demanding benefits, i would like to see a big club without live acts.

here (portugal) we don't have to pay to play, we usaully recive around 100/200 euros per show "normal cover bands" and have like 3/10 euros of free consume, and we play for like 1hour/3hours and share the stage with others bands sometimes.

but some guigs, we don't get pay, but we have a free dinner biggrin.gif

Yes "cover bands" get paid here to, i was refering to unknown bands.

I do not want to get paid for playing my music (at least not today) but it is very difficult to organise a show where you also have to spend money, pre sell the tickets ( thing that i hate) and fight with the place's managers.

we are thinking in saving that money and equip the band properly and go to play to places where they do not charge you at all, that's a good idea i think, i will tell you then if it worked

here in my town, like the weekend is for cover bands/well known original stuff bands and friday is for like unknown original bands to show their work, it's a cool thing i really enjoy here, they most of the they have like 1 hour to play, they won't recive me thinks, but if the public likes them, the owner of the bar, calls them again, now paying it.

Here in Bogota there are a few places where they will allow you to play but they are small although decent. But they won't pay or pay you a bare minimum (transport, food)

I guess that's where the internet can do it's magic and create a following without gigging, as some have done it
