It's funny - you say it's absolute minimum but Rusty, Vai, Satch, Mark Knofler, Michael Angelo use 9-42 biggrin.gif

A beginner needs to use heavier strings to develop strength. Actually I think light strings sound like crap, but that is another story. I expect most of the above at some point in their life pushed heavy strings, at least on acoustic. No way you ever get serious strength pushing light strings. You can get fast, but you won't get strong. The poster mentioned JerryC. Sure a bit sloppy, but he has a good rhythm on the fast parts, he is decent there. However on the slow parts at the beginning and in the middle, very mediocre at best. Actually I am being kind, he sounds like crap on the slow parts if you listen though the backing track. This is not a JerryC critique. Just pointing out evidence of a guy who learned to play fast, but never developed serious hand/wrist/forearm strength.

edit: I will mention one good use of light strings. I have 9-42 on one of my fenders. If I have played a lot, and my fingers are a bit sore I use that to give them a break for a day or so. I have a set even heavier strings that I keep on my les paul mahogany, as my serious workout guitar. A big plus I might mention, you really get stronger harmonics with heavy strings. You can get them without having to set the tone to fingernails scratching the blackboard quality.

Makes actually some sense to me. But yea through this Grip Master I think I will become some strength too. At least in the beginning until a certain point since my left hand finger aren't really trained yet.
Well I decided on the GHS 10-46 Strings. Mainly cos of two points since I don't know yet how they sound lol First: Cos they're cheap and seem to be good ones and second: Cos they're not so thin as 9-42,9-46 right ? Until I get better at changing strings and got more control of actual playing the strings I will stay with the 10-46 ones cos I think that the 9er would probably rip more easily. After I got better I would change around the different strings and see which suit my playing the best. smile.gif

Thanks for your great help biggrin.gif

Well before starting playing electric guitar i played acoustic guitar for 4 years so i believe i already had the strenght in my fingers when moving to electric and that's why now i like thinner strings the most!

Well again it's a metter of preferences! smile.gif

I figured that Pavel. Teachers often recommend that students learn that way for that very reason. I can see guys going back to thin to suit their style. Or possibly some of their guitars one way, some another, for different purposes.

when I played as a kid, there was this band I liked called Mott the Hoople. Still feel their studio rendition of Sweet Jane is the best I have heard. Anyway, on some songs they had this really wild vibrato. So I worked to imitate it. I would work with acoustic to build strength. Fingers would get sore, 3rd string would break a lot, but eventually I got it. Only found out now in the youtube age that the guitarist was getting that sound with a whammy bar.

Little question here.... if you like those DROP tunings why don't you just get yourself a 7-string guitar?

Well first of all i am buying a seven string, i actually have one now, but i need a better one (and its not actually really mine biggrin.gif) and I doubt youll believe me, but if you Drop a 7 string to Drop A, It sounds Quite Different than if a six string is Dropped that far, the tone is different, and it just feels alot different in your hands. i drop that far so i can get a similar sound to nile, which you cant really get on a 7.

Secondly, Between Car Insurance, This Website, The $70 i just spent on nightwish tickets, my 7 string money fund is not yet high enough for me to purchas the 7 string i want.....

The link doesn't work for me. Could you post a picture of it?

In my opinion dropping a 6-string gives you much less quality in sound than a 7-string!

Pavel,

this is actually the very first time where I do not agree with you.....

I find if I string 0.56 - 0.013 strings on my Vigier Excalibur 6 string and tune down to B it sounds more defined and punchy than my 7 String Universe.

(But then in general the Vigier sounds better. Once I finally visit my parents in Germany and pick up the Jem BFP that I bought some weeks ago I can make a better comparison.)

You know i don't have the 7-string for now so i am only speaking about what i heard from the experience of my friends. We have a band here in my city, and their guitarists played 6-strings for couple of years. They play really heavy music and now they bought 7-strings this year and they say they like it much more - heavier sound and it sounds much more defined.

The 7-string scale lenght is also longer so it is better for drop tunings.
Well, i will be able to check it myself once i get a 7-string. For now i only have their and your opinion. Self experience is best, right? wink.gif

My friend has that one! I was setting it up for him - had it 3 days at my home. He bought that one when i was buying JEM! I didn't like it too much. It somehow different than other Prestige serie guitars. Well anyway if it's good for you than it's great!

You mean mine with it ? What's the cutaway lol

Edit: Ohh now I see what you mean. Yea they seem really a bit small compared to the Ibanez you showed a bit above. But I think the access isn't a problem smile.gif

Access is sometimes a problem even on JEM so you should pick the guitar carefully! Really - it's a very important thing!

Really? ive never had that problem, but then again i dont own one, i just play them when i go into stores.

Thats why i alwasy recommend an RG Tremolo Series, the cutaways are very comfortable, i just wish all guitars had the Dean RC-7 Cutaway on it biggrin.gif

It becomes a problem if you want to play stuff like 4-nps stretch on D, A and low E string like this: 12-14-17-19 or 12-15-17-19 and similar licks. That's why i wanted the RC-7 badly but it's too expensive and not availabel in Europe for a long time so i'll have to buy something else.
