What Guitar Do You Recommend?

Hey guys, first post coming up!

After being away from playing the guitar for about 10 years, I decided to start fresh and trade my 62 american strat for a les paul traditional with the intention of playing some heavy rock/metal. It's just that ... I realised I'm not THAT into metal, and the guitar isn't as comfortable as when I first picked it up.

My style of playing has been almost exclusively texas blues, but I'm starting to feel "been there, done that" and it doesn't offer that much in terms of technical improvement. So after this metal phase I've found myself listening more and more to fusion and progressive rock and I'm starting to feel that I chose the wrong guitar. I've been checking out the Ibanez SV series (which shouldn't cost me anything since my LP is worth about as much as the Ibanez) and have to say that they look really good and seem to play well too. Have any of you guys got any experience with them?

I consider myself to be a fairly advanced player with decent technical skills - as much as you can get from playing the blues AND being a lefty playing right handed.

So my question is really if the Ibanez SV is a guitar worth checking out or are there any other in the same price range that would suit me better?

Well, I've played Ibanez for a while and I really like them. On the other hand if you can get your hands on an Ernie Ball Music man, those are really good for fusion, they are quite versatile in fact.

Hey man, thanks for the reply!

I've been checking out the music man axis, it looks like a great guitar. I haven't seen many used ones sold lately though, and a new one isn't really an option since it's probably another €1000 - which I can't afford right now. I'll just have to keep looking. I do really like the Ibanez SV series though, but I've heard they have a bit of a sustain problem, which sounds kind of annoying.

I will obviously do that. I would like to get a rough idea what to look for though as the lads/ladettes behind the counter rarely give solid advice (at least from my experience). The reason for the question was to hear what you guys (who are actually interested in playing the guitar) think.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know about SVs, but RGs are awesome. Comfortable, light, thin neck, and powerful humbucker tone. There are many models within the prestige (made in Japan) line, ranging from normal ones such as the 2570 to amazing ones such as the 4570 which has mahogany & maple top. Mind blowing.

I would agree with Daniel, I think you should check out Ernie Ball guitars, specially Music Man series in detail. You could like it more than Ibanez. Trying out Parker guitars would also be interesting. Kris has one and sounds great.

what about, maybe ,a inexpensive used RG that would allow for the new style but also if you didn't like it you would still have your gibson
plus you can never have enough guitars

I've never tried the ernie ball guitars but they seem to be really good and versatile.. But I tried a PRS custom 24 and it's the most versatile guitar that I've ever tried... however they are very expensive, at least here in my country...

Well, it matters a bit if the average payment is like 2000e per month, and you can pay it on 5 monthly payments, but what if the average payment in the country is 400e, you would need to pay for it for 5 years laugh.gif

Wow, lots of replies - you guys are awesome!

I agree with playing any music style on any type of guitar, it's just that I want a guitar that doesn't limit me as much as the Strat or Les Paul does. I'd like to have something that's easier to play - thinner and flatter neck than a strat would be awesome, and also not as chunky as the LP (I'm not that big of a guy and I have smallish hands). I really like the looks of the Ibanez SV - something I can't say about the EBMM. Hmm. I'm not sure anymore, it does look kinda cool. Sigh. Looks isn't everything, but it sure is something. smile.gif It seems most of you prefer the MM though, so I will have to investigate further. I should add that I've played all of the guitars mentioned except the PRS.

A new LP costs like €2000 so I should get around 1500-1600 when I sell it as it is in mint condition and more or less brand spanking new.
We recently bought a house, so what I get for the LP is my total budget for the next guitar (at least if you ask my wife - which is probably a good thing, otherwise I'm sure I would've bought a new Suhr or something...)

The Axis and Axis Super Sport (I'm not sure which one of these i prefer best) are kinda rare to find used, and the PRS custom is probably outside of my budget (?).

Decisions, decisions.

I really appreciate all of your advice and that you take the time to help me out. This is a great guitar community!

Hey Ivan!

I live a bit outside of Stockholm, Sweden. If I decide on an Ibanez I will buy it new from a local store. They said they'd match Thomann's prices, which is pretty good for a "real" music store. If i go with an Axis I'll buy a used one (to fit the mrs' budget) and most likely not from a store.

They can order anything except Gibson guitars, some monopoly thing going on there, not really sure how it works.
I like the Ibanez and it seems like really good value. I'm just worried about the sustain problem people have been reporting (which really should be a problem with floyd rose type of tremolos and not only the Ibanez) and the fact that it might be a bit of a racer/rock type of guitar.
