Iron Maiden use either Drop D Or Standard, Metallica have Used Standard, Eb, and D Standard to my knowledge.

Also here are my favorite metal tunings.

Drop C#
C Standard
Drop A
B Standard

Metallica used drop C in St. Anger i think.
Slayer had also used drop C, but also a lot of D# standard
Lamb of God use drop D (all the time i think).

But there are also a lot of metal bands that use standard tuning. Metallica and Iron Maiden uses it on most of their songs.

I dont see how thrash metal would work with drop c tunings or even D for that matter. Thrash has a very distinct sound that can only be in standard tuning.

A classic death metal tuning would be tuning guitar a whole step down. DGCfad.

Thrash metal is on standard EADGBE or half step down. The farthest you can go is drop D.

For NWOBHM style its pretty standard.
