I have been watching a lot of videos on here and you tube and I noticed last night that almost everyone when holding the pick keeps the thumb straight not bent. I noticed that mine is bent somewhat, I guess out of habit. I have been trying to straighten it more as I learn more my natural hand position, but what affect may that have on my speed, accuracy, etc. or does it matter?

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael AC, I had the same question in the past 'flexing' the thumb while playing. This isn't actually bad, depending on your style of playing for example blues, it great to do this. The issue is it slows your playing down.

I finally learnt to change the pick angle attack and lock the thumb straight, this is great and sounds much better with a pointed thick pick while playing fast. I could suddenly play a load faster, major breakthrough and I was like the worlds slowest player - now I like to shred.

Learnt off Todd Vidchat lessons from GMC, Michael Angelo Batio, and Paul Gilbert. The Paul Gilbert lesson vid Monkey posted helped me alot, it's great, learn from that! Doug Marks' Metal Method - Speed Kills 2010 by Michael Angelo Batio is another good DVD to learn off about this. Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar by Troy Stetina is another great killer for correct technique which I practiced (almost as bad as Todd Simpsons torture shred video chat lessons but not quite, lol). ph34r.gif

However, most people learn it one way or the other, I suggest you keep hold of both techniques, speeding up sounds more ridge/mechical but you need that for the notes to all sound out cleanly at that speed barely grazing the strings with minimum resistant, when you slow back down you can flex the thumb again really digging in string vibration/dynamics/feeling into your tone.

Hi Michael, I also perplexed over this question many times too. However, the more I concentrated on just building a good constant up/down motion from the wrist, the thumb took care of itself and stayed in position. It doesn't have to be ultra straight, it can still be slightly bent when you're playing. What I tried to avoid was the thumb flexing along with the up/down motion.. it looks like more of a 'push/pull' technique then. Some people are able to pick like this (see Michael Angelo Batio) but these guys are in the minority.

For general 'straight line speed' as I call it, where you're just alternating up/down.. you shouldn't need to engage the thumb to flex as the wrist should provide all the natural momentum. However the thumb does have a role when you change strings. In order to comfortable play across the strings, or inside the strings, the thumb needs to bend somewhat. Rather than concentrating on bending your thumb though, it should naturally start trying to do it when you play or practice licks that cross over or between the strings. This is normal so go with it. You just don't need thumb flexing for picking fast on one string. Hope that all makes sense ? smile.gif

I agree with Ben! And I might add that, this thing differs from one person to another - for instance i could never hold my right hand onto the guitar like Marty Friedman does! For instance, I hold my thumb pretty straight all the time - that's how it works for me smile.gif

Man, PG style is very aggressive, but very tight. I don't really like the tone that much, but it's awesome speed.
