Hi Michael AC, I had the same question in the past 'flexing' the thumb while playing. This isn't actually bad, depending on your style of playing for example blues, it great to do this. The issue is it slows your playing down.
I finally learnt to change the pick angle attack and lock the thumb straight, this is great and sounds much better with a pointed thick pick while playing fast. I could suddenly play a load faster, major breakthrough and I was like the worlds slowest player - now I like to shred. Learnt off Todd Vidchat lessons from GMC, Michael Angelo Batio, and Paul Gilbert. The Paul Gilbert lesson vid Monkey posted helped me alot, it's great, learn from that! Doug Marks' Metal Method - Speed Kills 2010 by Michael Angelo Batio is another good DVD to learn off about this. Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar by Troy Stetina is another great killer for correct technique which I practiced (almost as bad as Todd Simpsons torture shred video chat lessons but not quite, lol). However, most people learn it one way or the other, I suggest you keep hold of both techniques, speeding up sounds more ridge/mechical but you need that for the notes to all sound out cleanly at that speed barely grazing the strings with minimum resistant, when you slow back down you can flex the thumb again really digging in string vibration/dynamics/feeling into your tone. Man, PG style is very aggressive, but very tight. I don't really like the tone that much, but it's awesome speed.
