Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Tom Morello Style by Marcus Siepen

Hi guys, here is my next rec, I picked a really cool lesson by Mr. Siepen. Shot it in the evening so the video quality is kinda bad. Recorded with GR4, Reaper and my Ibanez guitar. Disclaimer: Mr. Driever is not trying to influence certain instructors with his T-Shirt choice.

Cool sounding solo, and nice laid back feel. I think this take has a nice "vintage" quality to it, due to the sound. Very nice. smile.gif However, there are some problems, and the biggest is detuned feel, because the guitar is way out of tune. Try to tune it perfectly before recording, it will create much better effect. Other then that, it can be a bit more tighter!

i agree with the guys, your guitar is kinda out of tune, but i got the feeling that it's because the song is on a low tuning? i'm not too sure about it, but i think your strings may be a big light for that tuning, and i can hear that the chords are getting in tune at then end of the vibration, that means the strings are vibrating too much, that means they are too lose, that means they are too light biggrin.gif

that's my theory!

First off, BRILLIANT SHIRT! smile.gif I almost gave you a 10 just for that. Your take here is quite good and played with feeling/intent. I do hear a bit of a tune drift though sad.gif It's a tad distracting from your playing. Is there an intonation issue on some frets? It sorta comes and goes. Are you gripping so hard it's raising the string tune by a few semi tones? The chord changes are quick when I'm hearing it, it may just be the power chord transition.

Maybe take another look at the first bit of the song and try some of the spiffy tricks I mentioned in the last rec take about power chords and see if any of them help here.

You've got the attitude to play this and pull it off well. And goodness knows you have the Tshirt! Just a bit more pinky focus on your chordage and I think you've got it!

Ponyhof!

Hey Christian ! cool.gif Cool take. For me, there's 2 main areas of improvement to make the lesson sound more like Marcus intended. When you slide down with the power chords from the 5th and 3rd frets.. the second chord is getting a little bit lost as you're rushing it. Try isolating this section and play it without backing.. focus on every chord change.. each chord should ring out the same. Stay on the second chord a bit longer before going to the open E5 shape.

The other thing concerns the open E5 chord.. after playing the bottom 3 strings, you play the higher strings like Marcus does. However it sounds like Marcus is only hitting the open E & B strings, which keeps it a neutral E5 sound. I think you're hitting the open G string as well which then makes it an Eminor sound, so it's quite different from the lesson.

Nothing major to fix, but just tweak them a little bit and the piece is yours ! cool.gif

Nothing too much to add aside from what the guys noted! BUT Tom Morello is a very rhythmic, groovie and inventive player - tightness is a must as well as perfect timing! So, put a little more time in this take - play at slow speed until you nail everything perfectly. You should be able to make me nod my head on this take for a ten smile.gif
