ok i am still very new so bare with me smile.gif

i'm just getting a little confused with the fingers. one of the the videos i've watched on dvd, you count your thumb as T, pointer finger as 1 and so on, but looking at this i see the numbers are actually the frets at that certain string.

each of the metal bars along the fret board are frets going from the top to bottom, so the first note would be played at the 5th string right below the first metallic dot going down from the head of the guitar?? i have the tab down from the most part

btw for a person who has just picked up a guitar for the first time about 2 days ago, you have helped me a lot, thanks smile.gif

Glad I could help smile.gif

So, first , as you noticed, in tab we are saying where the finger needs to go and nothing about which finger to use - you have to work that part our for yourself!

In terms of the numbering, we count the nut (the plastic metal or graphite bit with slots in for strings as 0, and then number the frets after tha from 1 upwards. You but your finger before the fret number marked. So, if it says 1, you put your finger in between the nut and fret 1. If it says 2, you put your finger in between fret 1 and fret 2. If it says 0, its just an open string.

Andrew, first of all - I really appreciate your contributions to this website. I have just recently started reading and practicing some of the lessons you've placed here - a tremendous source of help and tips for an old newbie/intermediate guitarist like me. One thing I wanted to point out is that you referenced a website with a large number of tabs - ultimateguitar.com. I believe it should be ultimate-guitar.com. But then, I could be wrong. wink.gif

Keep up the good work on this website!
