Hey Guys, what are some of your favourite legends ? One of mine has to be the legend about Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian Countess who was rumoured to have bathed in the blood of her victims to preserve her beauty. What is undisputable (as far as history tells) is that she did kill masses of young women by luring them to her castle.. but the blood bathing is what puts it firmly in the territory of 'legend'.

What scary, bloody legends have you always been fascinated by ?

I did my PhD years ago on Georges Bataille and because of him I came across quite a few blood filled stories/legends. At the time I needed written permission as at the time some of Bataille's works, and those related to it, were banned.

One high light in Bataille's ouvre (or maybe it's a low light) is Bataille's biography of Gilles de Rais, who was the real life model for the Bluebeard legends and was also Joan of Arc's lieutenant/2nd in command. De Rais is supposed to have killed hundreds of children in satanic type rituals as well as impailing and imolating hundreds of other victims on his castle walls. Some of this was later picked up by the film maker Pasolini who used it to inform his banned film Salo. Bataille also wrote several, quite gory, stories (Blue of Noon, Story of the Eye, etc): Story of the Eye for instance recounts the true story where a bullfighter is gored through his eye by a bull.

Funny you should mention Gilles De Rais.. Cradle did an album about him too ! I don't know anything about him though, sounded like a right nutter.

Once was thought that Count Dracula story was partly based on her image and story. I was in Erzsébet aqua park in hungary BTW in August, it is named by her.

I like alien myths, regarding ancient sites, like pyramids and artifacts.

He was defo a nutter smile.gif and not the sort of guy you'd want to meet on a dark night - or indeed any night.

Long time since I read Bataille's account of de Rais but I think de Rais used to have a thing about disembowling his victims whilst they were conscious and then playing with and wearing their entrails. Not the sort of thing you'd expect one of Joan of Arc's lieutenants doing really...

Those two and Bathory would have made a very scary trinity ohmy.gif .

They'd all have fallen out with each other quickly as each one would want to be the baddest though wink.gif .

A bit OT - but AFAIK Spain has the only public statue of Lucifer in the world in a public park (it's in Madrid). I'm sure there must be a good story as to why it's there but I don't know it.

In Serbia, we had a national legend - Savanovic Sava - the first Serbian vampire! He attacked the young womens who are used to grind grains in the mill! smile.gif

"Sava Savanović was said to have lived in an old watermill on the Rogačica river, at Zarožje village in the municipality of Bajina Bašta.[1] It was said that he killed and drank the blood of the millers when they came to mill their grains. Although he is usually said to have been the first Serbian vampire, there are claims that he was pre-dated in Serbian folklore by Petar Blagojević from Veliko Gradište, who died in 1724. Petar Blagojević and the affair surrounding him came to European attention at the time, under the name Peter Plogojowitz, and represented one of the earliest examples of vampire hysteria."

I think that Dracula was based in the real story of the cond Blad Dracul a man that dranks his enemies blood to intimidate them-

Here we have many stories, the most frightent is the one about a man call Carlos Saul Menem. This guy was Argentina's presitdent from 1990-to 2000.He applied the neo-liberal system. He destroyed 2 generations, increased a lot the poverty, and left us a huge debt. Every Argentine is scared if you said his name!!! dry.gif

Vlad the Impaler seemed liked a nice guy huh.gif I read quite a bit about this guy in various history books and his brutaility was pretty much at the top of list. I read in one book that he would build a large wood castle every couple years and then he would gather up / invite all the derelicts and deadbeats in for a huge feast. Once the feast was underway he would have the building torched.

Below describes how he earned his moniker.

"Impalement was Vlad's preferred method of torture and execution. Several woodcuts from German pamphlets of the late 15th and early 16th centuries show Vlad feasting in a forest of stakes and their grisly burdens outside Brașov, while a nearby executioner cuts apart other victims. It was reported that an invading Ottoman army turned back in fright when it encountered thousands of rotting corpses impaled on the banks of the Danube.[13] It has also been said that in 1462 Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople, a man noted for his own psychological warfare tactics, returned to Constantinople after being sickened by the sight of 20,000 impaled corpses outside Vlad's capital of Târgoviște"

Yep, he was a very very naughty man.

Although popular to contrary belief, as it's been menitoned here a few times, the only think Bram Stoker took from Vlad the Impaler as inspiration was his nickname 'Dracula' which meant something like Son of the Dragon.. apart from that, it was all his own imagination.
