Hi GMCers just stumble on some frank Gamble and saw this video. I guess it's a type of economy picking.
I must admit it feels very fluid and way easier than alternate picking.
In his scale he plays one chromatic note? Why?
Would love some thoughts on this as I'm think of giving this a go.

Frank is a master of Sweep PIcking so be sure to check some of his sweep vids as well smile.gif Good eye on his picking! He seems to be doing what I often do which is a "hybrid" approach of Eco ascending and AP descending. This is pretty much how I play every solo/lick. I"ve found that AP moving to higher strings actually slows me down compared to ECO, but AP feels more natural going from High to low strings. Give it a shot and see what you think smile.gif

His thoughts are very true and the technique is very effective however I won't use it as the only way to cross strings since I think that it has a particular sound. You won't sound like shredders like Gilbert, Malmsteen or Vinnie Moore if you only use this technique.

Chromatic note on the E sixth string is played only for picking order, in my opinion. Why he chose that one - he only knows . But because it Gambale sounds perfectly unique biggrin.gif

Yeah Todd I thought of you when I saw this. I'd heard of frank but not checked him out really and only found out yesterday that he is largely the man responsible for sweep picking. Will check him out more for sure.

Accents will sound different as up strokes sound different to down. One thing I'm thinking about his playing is how smooth it sounds compared I guess to ap picking where it sounds more aggressive.

Hm not sure about it, why can't he just finish on an up stoke and then if he's moving up start with a down stroke?

I had classes with Frank at LA music academy and he was always amazing. The economy picking was one of his lessons. It works great once you get used to it.

Gambale mostly made his name by developing arpeggio sweeping and economy picking to new levels. He also collaborated with famous jazz names, and made his name as world famous rock/jazz guitar player. This type of technique needs years of practice, but as Alex said: it's not so hard once you get used to it, and yes the tone is quite different then shredding.

Frank's approach sounds more like playing keyboards for my ears smile.gif that's what it sounds like I mean. I prefer AP because, as also Gabe said, the sound texture is very different.

I have this one. I think it's called monster licks and speed picking! I also have his modes no more mystery dvd. Really handy.
I thought this was a pretty standard way of doing things - what technique does Yngwie use? I only know this one...

He uses a combination of eco and AP.. For a lot of his 3 note per string ascending runs he uses EP, changing over the each new string with a downward stroke.. when descending from high to low he sometimes picks it all AP, or even plays some notes legato and picks some. I also read that for 3 note per string stuff he somtimes picks the first 2 notes only, playing the last one as a pull off, repeating that pattern across the strings. smile.gif
